Memory error PP2003 and Vista

I have just purchased a new PC with Vista. In attempting to load this new PC
with my licensed copy of Project Professional 2003, I get the following
error, after installation and when starting up PP:
"There is not enough memory to complete this operation. To free up available
memory, close programs, projects or windows you aren't using and then try
again".

I have 1 gb of RAM, 90GB of hard drive and a 1.3gb page file set, with no
other programs running. Can anyone point me to a solution?

Hi Dan,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :-)

I haven't experienced this and I don't know how the following works with
Vista, but please see FAQ Item: 18. Memory Problems. If that doesn't work,
you could try installing it from Windows safe mode.

Thanks for the welcome and the ideas. I tried all 3 points on #18 without
success. I then tried a "diskeeper" complete defrag and finally quit getting
the original error, after several uninstalls and reinstalls, not to mention a
download and install of PP SP2. PP now appears to install without error, but
when I click on winproj.exe, nothing happens.

Your thought on safe mode seemed a good one, but when I tried it, I got the
error "Windows installer is not accessible in safe mode ...".

Anything else I can try? I really need to get PP installed for my job and
really appreciate any help you see your way clear to provide.

Have you tried right clicking the winproj.exe file and selecting run as
administrator?
Sorry, Dan, I'm way out of my depth! Try posting on a Vista newsgroup as I
believe it is not a Project problem, because your's is the first I've heard
of and presumably everyone else managed it OK. It installed OK on my Vista
set up. Otherwise it's Microsoft
Support.

Thanks for hanging in there with me! I had already posted this problem on
the Vista group (where one other 'victim' had exactly the same problem), but
no one has responded. That's when I came to this group. the other 'victim'
also mentioned the same issue with Visio 2003. I just checked my Visio and
it, too, does not function.

I, like you, believe it is a Vista issue and I thank you for your efforts.
If you stumble across a solution and remember this exchange, please let me

your virtual memory by right clicking on My
Computer-->Properties-->Advanced-->Performance pan(click on Setting

Mike: SUCCESS!! After much back and forth, and with thanks to "Smart
Computing" magazine's technical staff (they directed me to MSFT support, as
their sense was direct incompatability with Vista as being most probable), I
ended up last night speaking with 4 MSFT reps. The last, reading from the
"book", officially told me PP2003 is supposed to be compatible with all OS
after XP. he then unofficially indicated it might be wise to upgrade my Vista
Home Premium to Business or Ultimate as they most probably would be more
compatable with a "professional" product. As this would be a $245 upgrade I
elected not to do that.

My company's IT guy then came up with a solution that WORKS! There's a
company called VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/download/) that offers a product
that will simulate an XP OS on your Vista machine. My IT guy gave me a disk
with a Reader and the desktop simulator (4 GB of material), which I have
successfully installed and am up and running.

BOTTOM LINE? Project Professional 2003 and Visio 2003 does not appear to be
compatible with Vista Home Premium (at least) at the present time. Positions
that disagree with this conclusion are cordially invited.

PS: the MSFT guy indicated I should monitor this forum for any subsequent
patches that may be produced to solve this clear issue.

Hope all this helps someone out there save the hours it took us (at least me
and Mike) to get here.

Thanks for the interest, but regrettably, I discarded the case #. If you can
come up with a solution, I'd very much appreciate it, as the Virtual Machine
solution does work, but it's a bit slow.

Within Microsoft, we use Proj 2003 on Vista regularly; my personal laptop is
very close to the configuration you use, and I run 2003 without incident. I
can't see how upgrading your Vista SKU would help, as the application
doesn't do anything out of the ordinary with the operating system.

With a case number, I could follow-up.

Running Vista Biz w/all updates, Office 2007 & Project 2003. Same thing
happened w/Project 2000: "Not enough Memory" error. Virtual Memory is fine &

I am having the same problem.

2GHz
4GB RAM
300GB Harddrive
Project Professional 2007
Project Professional 2007 SP1

Installed today. Try to launch, runs through configuring process, ends,
crashes and tells me that "there is not enough memory to complete ..." I
then researched and found Project SP1, and installed that ... crossing my
fingers in hoping for a "fix." Nope.

I resorted to closing just about every other expendable open program or
service thing on my computer, and then tried to launch Project, but if it's a
memory issue, I doubt that anyone would be able to use Project successfully
... because I sure have a lot of memory installed!

Is there a solution for those of us little people who don't have access to a
corporate IT dpartment? I am a single-user, not corporate, there is no IT
department to lean on to me resolve the issue.

Has anyone found an answer yet? I would be VERY greatful if anyone can
offer any suggestions for a solution.

No answer, but I'm running Vista Business (64 bit) SP1 with Project 2007,
2003, Office 2007 and 2003 with no problems.

I'm having this issue with a laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have 4g
RAM so it's clearly not a problem with memory but I can't find a work around
for this at all.

I did find something about changing registry files but I'm not confident or
knowledgeable enough to do that.

Desperately need to get this working for several projects =(
