I'm trying to use the PowerPoint Viewer 2007 to open a sample pptx file made
with PowerPoint 2007. I have installed FileFormatConverters.exe as well. When
I try to open the file, a prompt with "Save As" in the title bar and "The
converter failed to save the file." in the text appears. I can open
PowerPoint 2003 files without any trouble. Any ideas?

Thanks,

The PPT 2007 Viewer actually includes the compatibilty pack -- that's why
the installer is, like, 25MB. (The compat pack is FileFormatConverters.exe.)
So you should have the compat pack once with the Viewer and again when you
installed it separately. Definitely covered that aspect!

Now, the compat pack needs to have all high-priority Windows Updates
installed in order to work. The compat pack download page
(http://tinyurl.com/y5a879 ) says this: "Users of the Microsoft Office XP
and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install all
High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the
Compatibility Pack." I would just head to Windows Update and install
everything it tells you to install. (You can probably skip IE 8.)

After installing all Windows Updates, I'd reboot and then reinstall the PPT
Viewer. http://tinyurl.com/v2586 (That's a link to the Viewer page.)

That's a possibility, but this is a thin client running XP Embedded SP3, so
the windows update site doesn't work with it and this environment doesn't
have WSUS for XPE set up. I can install updates manually if I have an
installer, but that's about it.

I don't know how to help you, then. I suspect you are missing one of the
updates that will allow the Viewr to open 2007-format files.
