I recently left a company and brought my archive files with me. I do not
have3 the original machine ( Windows xp + Outlook 2000) and now have Vista
with Windows MAil.

I cannot run the import utility ( Cannot import messagesfrom the MAPI
client)

Any ideas?

Thanks

You can't open the OST on a machine other than the one that created it with
the profile that created it

There is an OST to PST converter:

http://www.newfreedownloads.com/Windows-Utilities/Backup/Recovery-for-Exchange.html

Give that a try and post back to let us know how you made out.

In addition to the requirement to convert your .OST file into a .PST file,
you will need to install Outlook on your Vista machine in order to import
into Windows Mail. WM, like OE before it, requires Outlook to be installed,
functional, and connected to the .PST file in order to access it. If
Outlook is not present, you get the MAPI client error you mention>

Open outlook.
Export current emails to PST.
Close the Outlook.
Go to outlook OST folder.
[ in general C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook ]

Replace the existing OST with the OST you want to import into outlook.
Open outlook.
At this point you should see all the old emails and folders.

Now, export these mails to PST format.
Close the outlook.

Go to the outlook OST folder again.
Delete the OST. ( next time when you restart outlook it will automatically create a new OST, so dont worry!).

Open the Outlook.
Let it download all the existing emails from the Exchange server.
Now import the mails from the PST your created above.

I hope this helps.

What possessed you to reply to a 2+ yr old message that was correctly
answered 2 yrs ago, with the wrong answer? Your method will only work if
the original profile that created the OST exists on the user's machine -
which he said it does not:

"I recently left a company and brought my archive files with me. I do not

have the original machine"

The only way for this user to get into the contents is using an OST to PST
conversion tool. See http://www.slipstick.com/problems/ost2pst.asp for
tools and methods if the exchange acct exists or was recently deleted.

I'm doing some research on the problem at hand and came across this post. I can't believe how belittling you are to someone who is trying to help. Yes they got it wrong, but you don't need to treat someone like that. You devalue the title of MVP by your behavior.

Not only wrong but TWO YEARS out of date.....

The question was correctly answered 2 1/2 years ago. Isn't it equally rude
to reply to such an old post that was already correctly answered? The person
with the problem certainly isn't hanging around waiting for an answer. It's
not helping anyone now, especially since the new answer is incorrect. It
added absolutely zero new information to the solution (except for what not
to do.)

Unfortunately, the forum (egghead café) you are using results in a lot of
wrong answers to very old posts. Egghead pushes their posts to this
newsgroup (at msnews.microsoft.com), where they litter the newsgroup with
useless replies. (I encourage you to "report" this post to the egghead
admins - maybe they will finally take my advice and lock older threads.)

I highly recommend you use a real newsreader and point it to
msnews.microsoft.com - it's a much better interface than eggheads. No
membership required. :) If you prefer a web interface, use
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.outlook.general&lang=en&cr=US -
it requires a LiveID though.

OST to PST Conversion: Offline Storage Files or OST is important, as you save here your entire Outlook emails data of multiple users. At times, it happened that your Outlook Exchange Server gets crashed owing to which data stored in OST files becomes inaccessible. SysTools OST Recovery software will help you to perform Outlook Exchange OST to PST after which you can easily access emails data. The question may be valid, but almost certainly the answer is useless.
It's *extremely* unlikely that the person who asked will ever see the
answer.
