For some reason while I was in the middle of unistalling MSN toolbar, my
computer got hung and I had to shut it down. When I rebooted and tried to
uninstall again, the uninstall is not there any more in the "Add/Remove
Programs". When I go to the web site to install the toolbar again, I get a
message the the tool bar/desktop search is already installed. The index icon
is there in the task tray, but the bar is no more in IE. Please help.

To add to Mohammad's entry:

I'm using Windows XP Pro, SP2, with IE6. My problem is that I can't uninstall MSN Toolbar Suite (v2). When I try, I get the message: "Windows Installer / Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'MsnToolbarSuite.msi' in the box below." But there is no such file on my computer!

When I point to the path of the installation package that I downloaded, I get this message: "Windows Installer / The file 'MSNToolbarSuiteSetup_en-us.exe' is not a valid installation package for the product MSN Toolbar Suite 2.0. Try to find the installation package 'MsnToolbarSuite.msi' in a folder from which you can install MSN Toolbar Suite 2.0." But as I said, there is no such file, not even in the Program Files folder in which the program is installed.

When I try to reinstall the Toolbar, I get the message that it is already installed and I can't go any further.

When I go to the MSN site and enter this informaton in the user feedback form it tells me that I cannot get a personal reply, but they'll consider the information I give them for future versions. This is not very useful to me. Then, when I go to a different MSN support site to post my problem, I am told that I need an .MSN Passport before I can submit my problem to them. I do not have one of those, nor never will I have one.

This is a double-bind (or is it a triple-bind?): I can't uninstall it and I can't install it so I can uninstall it, and I can't get any help from them. I want to uninstall the MSN Toolbar/Desktop Search Suite. Can someone please advise me how I can do it? Thank you.

Frank,

Here is what I had to do to get around this problem. I installed latest MSN
messenger (Beta) including all the options - it comes with "Desk Search
Suite", etc. While installing it, it detected that there was an incomplete
"install/uninstall" in progress and prompted me to fix it for me which I
happily accepted. Then I unistalled the whole thing and it worked. The tool
bar, the desk top search etc. is gone. The only thing that's left from this
whole "MS" tools is when I highlight a word in my IE and right click I get
"MSN Search" and when I click it nothing happens - I feel it's annoying to be
there but at least I got rid of the whole thing for now. I'm not sure if I
will install it again while it's "Beta" :-(. By the way, I have a passport ID
and I submitted the problem to MS and no answer to my orginial question until
now. Anyways, I hope this helps.

Mohammad, you are very helpful and I appreciate your detailed reply and advice, but unfortunately the procedure did not work for me. I downloaded and installed the MSN Messenger Beta, as you described. However, it did not detect anything on my machine and didn't prompt me to fix anything. I installed and uninstalled it four times, with the same results. I even tried the "Repair" feature but that changed nothing. Perhaps your situation is different because your MSN Toolbar uninstall was interrupted by a computer crash, which left it damaged. Mine is fully installed, and the MSN Messenger Beta does not detect anything wrong. It completely ignores the toolbar. I even tried renaming the MSN Toolbar Suite folder in the Program Files folder so the MSN Messenger Beta install program wouldn't see it, but that made no difference. I don't know what to do to get rid of this "demon" that Microsoft has fooled me into putting on my machine.

I can't explain what caused the problem, but you can try the following to
manually clean up all traces of the toolbar suite and perhaps that'll allow
you to reinstall:

1. Hide all MSN Toolbars if they are visible.
2. Go to C:\Program Files and delete MSN Toolbar Suite directory. If you
see MSN Apps delete that as well.
3. Launch regedt32 and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSN Apps
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSN Toolbar
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSN Apps
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSN Toolbar
(note that you may not see all of them, as your uninstall might have
been partially done)
4. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Local Settings\Application Data
and delete MSN Toolbar Suite directory
5. Reboot your system

This should remove all presence of MSN Toolbar Suite on your system. Now
you should be able to reinstall Toolbar again from
http://beta.toolbar.msn.com

Please let me know if this doesn't address your problem.

Thanks,
- Liz
