Both files are located on a removable thumb drive.
Any ideas why this error persists even after I redirect the link?

First, it is recommended by those more expert than myself that you not
open _any_ Office documents directly from removable media. That may be
the problem, especially if the thumb drive doesn't have sufficient
space to create the temporary files necessary to support the documents.
Another possible factor is whether you have PowerPoint installed. Word
can't open a PPt file. The link merely points to the target which
relies on the availability of the supporting program to open it.
Try copying the files to your HD and see if that works better.

In addition to what CyberTaz says, to work from hyperlinks the file
extension is essential. Unix relies on the extension to hand the file off
to the correct displaying application.
For all this to work, the URL must have every letter capitalised, and use
forward slashes not colons in the path. The protocol must be "file://..."
not "http://..."
