I have a client that got an error (-5000) while using Entourage. Now it
won't let me rebuild his database and states, "An error occurred while
attempting to rebuild your database. An unknown error (-5000)
occurred."
I have got a copy of his database from the server and it is fine for a
few minutes, but then the error window will pop up again. I have
reinstalled Microsoft Office, and am aware that error (5000) is a
permissions thing, but this is (-5000) does anyone have any thoughts?

I recently ran into this problem also. It happens when I sync my
laptop to my home machine. As you noted, after I sync, the permissions
change on the home machine, causing the -5000 error. I correct the
permissions and the database is good. In my case, after I restart
Entourage, it then tells me my rules and signatures files are corrupt.
I copy in the old files (from the laptop) and everything is good again.
In my case, apparently during the sync the permissions get changed.
Why, I don't know.

Doesn't really answer your question as to why.

Did you quit the Microsoft Database daemon before trying to rebuild? All
Office applications including Office Notifications and/or the Microsoft
Database daemon have to be quit before rebuilding. It's easy to overlook or
forget to quit the daemon before rebuilding.

Try deleting this preference file in your User's --> Library Preferences:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist

If the daemon's file was corrupted it could cause problems. It certainly
doesn't hurt to trash this and let Entourage rebuild it when launched.

Jon, did you ever get an answer to your question? My sister is running the
latest maintenance release of Entourage 2004. She receives messages without
attachments just fine, but anything with an attachment creates the -5000
error message you've been getting.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hal

Attachments are stored in the Entourage Temp folder inside the Microsoft
User Data folder. This is where Entourage is trying to save the file before
it opens. Check the permissions on this folder.

Owner Access: Read Write
Group Access: Read only

Thanks, Diane. I'll pass this along to my sister and let you know the
outcome.

Diane, your solution worked. Actually, I had her delete the Entourage Temp
folder after quitting Entourage. When she started Entourage, again, a new
Entourage Temp folder was automatically created with the correct
permissions.

Thank you.

It's nice to know that this was the cause and not something in the transfer
of the files.
