Relevant computer specs: Vista 64 bit, 6gb RAM
I'm trying to get Zoo Tycoon 2 and the Endangered Species Expansion to run
on my computer. I'm beginning to think that it's impossible.
I can successfully install the programs, but when I go to run them, I get
two errors.
The first is "Protection Stub has Stopped Working."
The second is "You need at least 256 MB of system memory to run Zoo Tycoon
2. (0 MB detected)."

I've searched endlessly and tried all the things I've found so far, to no
avail. To combat the Protection Stub error, I tried disabling "DEP" and
restarting. Didn't work. I also tried manually limiting my computer to 2GB
of RAM (ugh) to try to get the other error to go away. Nothing has worked!!!

I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall here... Microsoft wants me to
shell out another $35 to talk to some Indian chick on a phone, and I can't
even register for an account on the Zoo Tycoon.com forums. \

I read a post where someone was having the memory problem and when they
bought and installed the Extinct Animals expansion, the problem disappeared.
Anyone else have a similar experience?

Anyway... I'm really desperate here, so I would really appreciate any
insight you guys could give me.

Zoo Tycoon does not like more than 4GB of RAM available (32bit game). You did
not say how you attempted to limit the memory - below worked on my computer.

1) click start & type MSCONFIG in the search/ run box.
2) select boot tab
3) Select advanced options
4) check the Maximum memory box
5) set memory to any value less than 4GB

Note: I set it to 4992. On reboot 3968 kB was displayed as being available
(total physical memory, using System Information).

Did you ever find out how to get the game to run. I have 4 GB of ram and it
keeps telling me that I need 256 Ram and 0.0 is detected. I am running Vista
64. Do you know how to make your ram lower in this version. I am not being
able to take it down or just don't know how tooo. PLEASE HELP

Did you get any kind of resolution to this problem? My daughter just received
a new Dell computer for Christmas that runs Windows Vista. We are trying to
install and keep getting this same error message.

Thanks,

Oregon Mom

Installing Extinct Animals expansion pack solved this problem for me (it
updates many files including ZT.exe).

Running Vista Ultimate x64, quad core, 8 GB RAM. Do not need to run ZT.exe
in compatability mode or as Administrator.

Patrick2's method worked, the decreasing of the RAM. I just tried it and then installed the game and it runs like a charm!!
I received this game as a gift for Christmas last year, and it worked on my old computer (32-bit Vista). Of course, that computer died and I got a new Dell 64-bit Vista with 4GB. And I was heartbroken when ZT2 didn't work!! I have been searching for a way to make it work on my new laptop, and thank goodness I finally found it!
Thanks!!

only thing is that I am not using my computer to its full potential... I
won't be hooked on Zoo Tycoon anyhow, Thanks again!
