i installed aoe the age of kings on my new laptop that has windows 7, and i
discovered that the water is purple and the grass is brown. how can i fix
this? ive tried everything, from re-installing it to downloading updates for
the game, and none worked.

it is a known problem.
Look around this forum, you'll see a couple of fixes (dirty fixes, but fixes)
