Can I change the ping reply to be more than a 'pong'?

I would like to return in the metrics the version and build # of my grails application and the "Ping" response seems like a great place to do that. Is there a way to override the default 'pong' reply? Another possibility might be to change the "version" in the /metrics served page to be the version of my app instead. Thoughts?
