Met Office weather warnings would be a good addition to DataPoint in my opinion. Currently only the warnings headers are available via RSS, but not the actual warning content.

I agree this would be good

It has been agreed by the Data Strategy Board (Cabinet Office) that the release of Met Office National Severe Weather Warnings should be controlled to ensure that the Met Office maintains it's authoratative voice making sure that a consistent message about warnings is maintained. However, we are looking into how to best allow access to the underlying xml data that is used to create the warnings, so that we can increase the reach of them. Access to the datafeed will be controlled and specific terms and conditions associated with their use and presentation developed. I'll keep you posted of any progress we make. Clare

Hi Clare,

I'm just wondering if there have been any updates with regards to allowing us access to warning content.

Kind regards,
Will.

Hi Will

We were on track for October, but in looking at the wider technology needs for managing access to data we felt that the original plan wouldn't meet the more stregic aims, therefore it's likely to be spring 2015 before we can provide access to warnings.

Not ideal, and not what I had hoped, but we are making progress.

We are getting there, but unfortunately there are still a few elements to put into place before we can make them available. Likely to be another couple of months yet.

I wonder if anything ever came of this?

For anybody wondering, there's now a public API for weather warnings.

Thanks for the info Connor, just what I have been looking for.

I tried to sign up for a key, but got a 404 error on submitting the request, so not sure if it succeeded. I'll reach out to support if I don't see anything in a few days.

Thanks again for the info.

Kind Regards,

Mark

No problem at all!

Please let us know how that goes, as I think that it'd be helpful if people on the list knew what to expect after signing up for a key.

Have a great weekend.

Hi,

does anybody know if the content of the feed is exactly the same as the one from Meteoalarm (https://feeds.meteoalarm.org/) or are there differences?

Thanks,
Michael

Michael,

My understanding is that you'll get all of the same warnings from Meteoalarm's feed but in a slightly different format; namely, the Common Alerting Protocol v1.2.

Just bear in mind that, if you use the API from the Met Office, you'll need to use it in accordance with the NSWWS Style Guide. I'm not sure if this requirement would apply to Meteoalarm (but it's still best practice).

All the best,
Con

Just heard back from support - apparently it's a known issue, and should be resolved soon.
Note that the request forms are being receive, despite the errors.

Kind Regards,

Mark

A quick update...

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your request to gain access to our National Severe Weather Warning Service.

We are currently working with our legal team to update the terms to make them suitable for Business to Consumer use. Once these have been created I’ll be in touch again to get the access set up for you.

Depending on how you are planning to use the API, it might be more appropriate to provide the service on our Business to Business terms. Let me know if you feel this might be appropriate for your use case.

Well, they didn't say no - yet 😉

Kind Regards,

Mark

Mark,

We're planning to use it for a B2B use-case so I'll submit an application later today and post a copy of the terms when we receive them.

Have a great end to your week.

Best,
Con

I've submitted our application and still receive the HTTP 404 Not Found error referenced above. I'll update when we hear back.

We've since received an order confirmation and the T&Cs. I can't share them here due to the clause on confidentiality but they seem entirely reasonable.

We've now got our API key and it all seems to work fine. Fantastic service from the Met Office too.
