Where can one park and where do you walk to see the Red-headed Woodpecker at Fox Chase Ponds and wetlands?

Frank and those interested,

See attached checklist:

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S57563711

The map on the checklist shows the route I take to see the Red-headed Woodpecker (blue line on map). I park on Fox Chase Road by some wooden posts denoting Howard County open space (white circle on map). From there I walk around the retention ponds counter clockwise eventually  crossing a cement culvert. This is where it gets tricky because there is no path just deer trails and lots of ticks.  Follow the blue line from the checklist is the best I can tell you.  The State Highway Administration wetlands, where the woodpecker has nested the last two years, is where the blue trail ends.

If you go in the morning you need a rain suit due to head high wet vegetation.  Water proof boots are a must as is tick protection. Very few venture there in summer.  Best time to view them is winter!

Good birding!

Thanks very much, Jeffrey.

I did have the same problem Les Culler just mentioned.  I can find the site location from your checklist, but not the detailed map with the blue line.  But in any event, it's probably not wise for me to attempt the trail until the winter, given that I now have a bit of trouble walking, particularly
when I can't clearly see the trail.

So I have a second question - is the Woodpecker resident there?

Thanks again!

Just a heads up to Jeff and others:  the “tracks” map that appears on your eBird checklist if you use eBird Mobile while walking around a site is only visible to you and to others to whom you have shared the checklist so that they get the checklist in their own eBird accounts.  Those maps are not visible to the public, not even if you provide the link to the eBird checklist.  That’s covered in this news release from eBird: https://ebird.org/news/new-checklist-view-in-ebird
