Naturalist Society. This report covers the week starting Tuesday,
November 28, and was completed on Tuesday, December 5 at about 9:00
a.m.

Information on noteworthy birds during this week is presented below in
taxonomic order, as set forth in the American Ornithologists' Union
Checklist for North and Middle American birds, as revised through the
57th Supplement (July 2016).

TOP BIRDS THIS WEEK: SNOWY OWL in DE, MD, and VA, ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER in MD, LARK SPARROW in DC, HARRIS'S SPARROW in MD and VA,
WESTERN TANAGER in MD, SHINY COWBIRD in MD

OTHER BIRDS OF INTEREST: CACKLING GOOSE, GOLDEN EAGLE, ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK, ICELAND GULL, WHITE-EYED VIREO, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, YELLOW
WARBLER, INDIGO BUNTING, DICKCISSEL

TOP BIRDS

SNOWY OWLs seem to be starting another active winter in the area. The
one in Eastern Neck NWR (Kent Co MD) continues, with sightings Nov 29
& 30 and Dec 2. In DE, one SNOWY OWL was seen Nov 29 along Port Mahon
Rd in Little Creek WMA (Kent Co), and another was photographed Dec 4
in Fowler Marsh (Sussex Co). Another SNOWY OWL showed up Dec 4 in
Harford Co MD along Holy Cross Rd (NOT the Holy Cross Rd in Anne
Arundel Co). The two SNOWY OWLs at Poplar Island (Talbot Co MD)
continued on Nov 28. The SNOWY OWL originally seen on Mr. Showalter's
property along Dinkle Ave (VA257) continued on Dec 1, then seemed to
work its way SE along VA257 and was reported Dec 4 across from the
McDonald's at the intersection of VA 257/682 & I-81.

The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER in Prince George's Co MD continued Dec 4
near the Anacostia River Trail.

The LARK SPARROW at the National Arboretum (SE DC) continued on Dec 2.

The HARRIS'S SPARROW continued near the Anacostia River Trail, with
sightings on Dec 2 & 4. Another HARRIS'S SPARROW showed up in Page Co
VA, just north of the White House Boat Ramp; it was seen Dec 3 & 4.

The WESTERN TANAGER continued Dec 3 & 4 in Jefferson Patterson Park,
Calvert Co MD.

The SHINY COWBIRD continued all week in the Kensington neighborhood of
Bethesda MD.

OTHER BIRDS OF INTEREST

Two CACKLING GEESE were seen Nov 30 in Augusta Co VA along Bells Lane,
and a single "RICHARDSON" CACKLING GOOSE was reported Dec 4 at
Hart-Miller Island (Baltimore Co MD).

Two GOLDEN EAGLEs were reported by the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch
(Augusta Co VA) on Dec 1. In Sussex Co DE, two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKs (one
dark morph, one light morph) were reported Dec 1 in the Broadkill
Marsh.

Hart-Miller Island hosted an ICELAND GULL on Nov 29.

Some very late small birds were reported: a WHITE-EYED VIREO Dec 2 at
Masonville Cove, Baltimore Co MD; BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERs, one at
Blackwater NWR (Dorchester Co MD) on Dec 3, the other continuing at
Hart-Miller Island on Nov 29 and Dec 4; a YELLOW WARBLER spotted Dec 2
at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park and the Anacostia River Trail (both
Prince George's Co MD); an INDIGO BUNTING seen Dec 4 at the (private)
Big Water Farm (Queen Anne's Co MD); and a Dickcissel seen Dec 1, also
at Big Water Farm.

servers via the ABA Internet links, and on eBird records.
