I received a phone call from a friend, who is a semi-experienced birder, who asked me what was the sparrow that had a bright golden crown. He had seen it this afternoon through binoculars about 4:30 p.m. while
walking on the towpath upstream from Great Falls in Montgomery County. He was about 100-200 feet past the end of the parking lot upstream. The sparrow was actually on the ice in the canal, hopping around and picking things off of the ice.
When I told him to check Google image, he said that that was the sparrow he had seen. He also said it matched the drawing in Sibley's. He didn't remember any black because he was struck by the bright yellow
crown. He does know kinglets and knew that this was definitely not that bird.
If anyone is in that area tomorrow, it might be worthwhile to check it out. There were lots of juncos and other sparrows in the vegetation along the canal, but this sparrow was right on the ice.
Good luck.
