It is certainly not unusual to be visited by a Rose-br Grosbeak during migration - we usually get one every year. But SEVEN at once deserves comment. Three on Sunday have now grown to 7, and the 5 adult males held a convention on our feeder today; the female and adolescent male were not invited. One can hardly get enough looking at these handsome birds; they'll be gone all too soon.

Have others noticed a similar surge in this species? We also noted 4-6 catbirds today; most unusual for our yard.

Fred,

We usually have up to three or four breeding pairs of Catbirds here.  One of the great joys I used to experience was seeing the RBGBs here and again in my annual Warbler trips to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont (where I am from, along with Philly).  I think it is a very good sign for this particular species-the Boreal forests and associated hardwood patches are one of the habitats that RBGBs use in the North Country - they are very adaptable birds and also breed in my Mom and sister's neighborhood  (mine too) in Burlington.

Now there are 6 male and 3 female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks at the feeders. Also an Indigo Bunting adding to the color.
A bit like dying and going to heaven!

In Bowie too. Sitting reading newspaper and realized that that song wasn't a robin.  One male right out on deck, two in feeder and one female in tree.

Male and Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak this morning 5/5, eating suet and sunflower at feeder, a second male singing nearby. Female yesterday. Longest run of grosbeaks ever at our place.

You can add Germantown, MD to the invasion. I had 8 at my feeders on Tuesday, 5 males and 3 females. That is by the far the most I have ever seen at one time. It was a real treat!

Took a work day at Home in Ellicott City yesterday and was rewarded with morning and afternoon visits at my feeders with groups of 5 and 7 RBG. A bird which has only graced my yard twice in the last 28 years
