Yesterday morning (Wednesday) I had 3 gaggles of Canada Geese flying high and definitely heading north. I am sure the southerly winds helped.

I have about 40 acres of farmer's fields across the street from my house. The field is lined with woods on 2 sides with a stream flowing thru the woods. I was out listening for woodcocks for the past 2 nights with no luck. I have had them before in these fields. Any woodcocks being heard??

We also had 2 gaggles of 60+ Canadas flying very high towards the northeast while birding the Parkton section of the NCR Trail.

At least 5-6 Woodcock were displaying last night in appropriate habitat in Patuxent River SP from 05:55 pm until we left about 06:45. Spring Peepers were in full chorus as well.

No woodcocks yet, which is highly unusual. I've been checking for them every evening at our house (by Jug Bay) and have yet to hear/see one this year.

Sent by mistake before I finished. We normally have them by 3rd week in February here, but in general their numbers have been declining for many years. For the last several years I've only been seeing 1-3 displaying hereat this time of year, about a 50-75 percent decline. The trend is not likely to improve.

On a more positive note, we had the first Osprey of 2018 here yesterday, our third earliest arrival as noted in my eBird report.

I saw a Woodcock in my neighborhood in Gaithersburg at dusk.  I first detected it because of the twittering wing sound.  I thought that it was going to display but it didn't come back.

Also, a Pine Warbler was singing in a stand of pines yesterday at an elementary school in Rockville.

We saw and heard woodcock at Wooton's Landing, AA County, in their usual spot earlier this week.  There were probably 8 individual birds and they were active.  This was surprising to me, as the wooded field has become more of a swamp recently.  My impression is that there are less than the last few years as in the past they were active over a wider area in the park.

Yesterday morning while walking around McDonogh pond in Owings Mills, I counted over 400 CAGO in 3 large skeins heading north between 8:15 and 9 a.m.
