Hello McFatter Family,

I would like to begin this week by congratulating Alejandro Jacobo and Alexa Sauvagere on their Literary Fair success. Both student will be honored at an awards ceremony at Broward Center for the Performing Arts on May 17th for their winning submissions.

Also last week, we held another amazing Tech Fair. At this event, students in grades nine and ten were able to walk around and see the exhibits and speak with current eleventh and twelfth grade students of all of the technical offerings at McFatter.  Thank you to Mr. Rosenthal, Ms. Henley, and Mr. Kinghorn for coordinating this valuable event. Once the Spring Tech Night takes place next week, all tenth grade students will be receiving their course selection forms to make their final choices. Technical program placements will be based on availability of space and honored in the order in which they are received.

Today begins the AP testing season as we continue mandatory Florida Assessments. Please review the exam schedule below to insure that all students are in the testing room on time each day. Please be aware that the College Board has strict rules on when tests are to be administered for the Advance Placement program.

Seniors, please go to the attachments for the McFatter Foundation Scholarship form that many of you have inquired about. The deadline to have it in is next week.

I wish you all a fabulous week.

Take care,

Lillie Henry

Magnet Coordinator

News from Ms. Lynn, BRACE Advisor (multiple attachments):

Please call (754)321-5805 with any questions you may have regarding BRACE News.

Seniors - This is a big weekend for many of you.  May 1st is the deadline to confirm your attendance at your final school choice.  You need to make sure that you make your admissions deposit, thus holding/confirming your seat.

Knowing your final school choice will help you complete the Broward Graduation Survey on Family Connection.  Completion of this survey is required in order for you to receive your cap and gown at graduation rehearsal.  Please be careful when completing this survey.  So far nearly every student who completed the survey entered information incorrectly or did not include all of their information (especially scholarship awards and final transcript requests).  The district will be sending out final transcripts based on the requests through Family Connection.  Students should only be requesting a final transcript for one school.

I would like to acknowledge as many seniors as possible at the Senior Awards Ceremony being held on May 16th.  (All seniors are invited.  Each senior is allowed to bring three guests to the awards ceremony.)  In order for me to acknowledge a scholarship at senior awards, I will need documented proof of the award.  No proof = no acknowledgement.  I need all documentation of scholarships and/awards prior to Friday, May 5th.

Kids of Character - Self-Control

Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as Kids of Character representing the character trait - Self-Control.

9th grade - Ethan Seigel

10th grade - Angela Rodriguez

11th grade - Noah Drillick

12th grade - Mehak Ali

We would also like to recognize the other students who were nominated for this award and also very deserving of recognition.  Kaitlyn Cantrell, Iyan Alemany, Amy-Nicole Toro, Makayla Ivey, Ashley Puerta, Kyle Caruso, Zachary Hartman, Ashley Hunter, Anusha Rao, Briona Haffizulla.

Juniors - Are you interested in attending a prestigious college... out-of-state... and have your education paid for?  Come to our Posse Foundation Information session being held on May 4th @ 11:00am.  Sign up through Eventbrite @ http://www.eventbrite.com/o/brigitte-lynn-8407916290.  You can also learn more about the program at: https://www.possefoundation.org/

Class of 2017 - Are you planning on staying local after graduation?  Will you be looking for a job?  Would you like to have a positive impact on one of our youths?  Americorps is looking for Firewall Mentors.  You will have the opportunity to earn a paycheck, in addition to receiving an education award.  See attached flyer.

Class of 2018:   The Common College Application has released their essay prompts for next year.  Check them out at: https://www.commonapp.org/whats-appening/application-updates/common-application-announces-2017-2018-essay-prompts

Family Connection - Last school year, the School Board of Broward County purchased a program called Family Connection (it is sometimes referred to as Naviance).  This is a wonderful resource that has a plethora of information applicable to all grade levels 6 - 12.  There are interest inventories, college search/match, transcript request, scholarship match/databases, etc.   We have given assignments to all of our students to get them familiar with the program.  I highly encourage all students and families to use this program as much as possible.  If the school board does not feel that they are getting the appropriate benefit from the program, it is possible for us to lose it.  Attached is a guide to explain how to get started.

FAFSA - FREE Application for Federal Student Aid

Seniors - be sure to check with the schools that you are applying to, aall schools can have different FAFSA priority deadlines.  After you have completed your FAFSA you should wait 3 - 5 days for it to process.  Then you should go back in to your FAFSA account and check you Student Aid Report (SAR).

*** The district is trying to keep track of how many seniors complete the FAFSA.  Please let me know if you have already completed your FAFSA and received your student aid report (SAR). ***

Raise.me - Did you know you could earn a scholarship for every time you got a good grade in high school?… you can also earn money for playing sports, volunteering in the community, participating in school clubs, being a leader and even for those PSAT scores you just received!  On Raise.me you can earn these micro-scholarships towards over 200 colleges including UF, UCF, FIU and FGCU for everything you’ve done throughout high school, you can even put in your grades and activities from the 9th grade!  Now is the time to get started before the college deadlines pass, so let’s have you earn your first micro-scholarship. Create your own Raise.me account. It’s free for you and you can earn money for doing everything you’re already doing!

SAT & ACT Test schedules - Please see attached flyer for the 2016-2017 SAT and ACT test dates.  Pay attention to the registration deadlines.

Fee Waivers are now available for juniors who are on free or reduced lunch.

Traditionally students take the SAT and or ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year.  Both of these test are college entrance exams.  Schools will accept these tests equally.  It is recommended that students take both the SAT and ACT.  This way they will be able to determine if they have a strength on one test over the other.  Keep in mind that most schools look at the scores that are most favorable to the student.  At the time of registration, students are able to send their scores to 4 schools for free.  If students wait until after testing to send these scores, they will have to pay $12.00 to have their scores sent.  It is the student’s responsibility to have their scores sent to the various schools.  Schools will only accept official score reports which are sent directly from these testing agencies.

Free and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves.  Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year).  Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers.  If a student were to take advantage of all of the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500.  It is well worth the time to complete aapplication to see if you qualify.

Fee Waivers are now available in the BRACE office for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

On Campus Events:  College visits are open to juniors and seniors.~ All students must have a college visit pass to attend.~ The student must sign up through Eventbrite (http://www.eventbrite.com/o/brigitte-lynn-8407916290) to get a college visit pass/ticket.~ Space is limited.~  Students must have their teacher's permission to attend. ~ It is between the teacher and the student whether it is appropriate for the student to miss class time to attend the college visit ~ Students should check Eventbrite often as visits are constantly being added.
