Hi all,

So this is driving me nuts...

Whenever you tick the "Preserve UV's" checkbox in the move tool, you're supposed to be able to drag around vertexes and get the same tweak applied to the UV map, resulting in a non-distorted texture on the mesh. This is awesome for fixing models which needs a quick geo fix.

However, many times you'll get this error:
Error: Unable to preserve UVs. Disable the Preserve UV option to continue with this edit.
...and the vertex edit will just snap back to the original vertex placement.

But what's really annoying me is I know most of the time you can just keep dragging the vertexes in the viewport (not by numbers/MEL) repeatedly, and if you hit that magic spot, they will stay in place.

So -- anyone know what this is all about?

Regards,
Fredrik

Oh I know, I had this recently happen to me but I forgot how to solve it. Give me a minute, I'll run Maya and try to remember what exactly I did (I just remember that the solution was very simple :D)

I can't remember for the life of mine, cause now in all cases it miraculously works :)
But you can always send me your model if you're willing to of course, I'd gladly check it out, cause I want to remember what I did myself, and so I can write it down to my "BugsAndSolutions" text file :)

If you prefer not to, try deleting prefs folder (C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\maya\VERSION_OF_MAYA\prefs
But I assume that you've probably already tried that one.

Aah. The good old prefs issue...but I don't know if that could really be related?

After an unsuccessful vertex tweak, I peak into the script editor and re-run the move command but without any decimals. By doing this it seems the success rate of the command is around 75% instead of some where in the 5-10% range. But that's not the entire truth behind this odd thing as it does not always work to do this.

No,  I don't think it's Prefs.
What the error is saying is that its mathematically impossible to retain the UVs when you are doing what you are doing.
This happens all the time for me.
If you look at the texture as you move the verts,  it should be intuitive to see what maya is attempting and hopefully how to avoid it.

Fredrik, I've just tried it on a few more complex models and in the regions that are "hidden" from camera and it still perfectly works, my vertices don't jump or snap to specific locations or anything. I can move vertex anywhere, I can move it along the edge, I can move it along the curve, everything.

You mean the problem went away after clearing the prefs?

No, it's that I just can't seem to even bump into that problem at all right now, but I definitely remember that I did run into that many times, actually quite recently, like a week or two ago.

Sorry if someone's mentioned this already... But sometimes, certain movement operations fail because of the mode that the move manipulator is in. Maybe changing the move mode from "object" to "world" in the move options (or vice versa) will help?

Yes Sid, that's totally possible, now that I think of it I think that may have been what caused the problem for me couple weeks ago.
