How did you calculate location suitability and neighborhood suitability?

For the suitability/ probability "map" ( prepare probability maps mode);  you have to calculated it after you did a successful model run.
Hope that helps,
 Dani

Hi Suparno,
No I havent used  the neighborhood setting yet. I just tried, and it asked me for an alloc.2 file. My guess is that you need to provide to the program some estimation of the local influence of each factor, like for the alloc1.file
Are you trying to do that?
Best,
Daniela

Hi Pulalesh,
The program stops at 20,000 iterations, that means it did not teach any solution. I interpret that as " I am asking  the program to do something impossible ".
Fist time it happened to me, the demand.in had comas, so it read 0 demand ( of course impossible to reach).
Try chancing the iteration mode ( line 12 of main.in). I set it to 1 (absolute mode) and gave it a big amount of ha for convergence criteria. Also if you are setting spatial restriction  or other restrictions take them out and see if it runs. Then add one by one the restrictions you want and diminish the convergence criteria, until you reach the model you want.
 Hope that works!
 Best,
 Daniela

Hi everyone!
I have a question for you. Had anyone used the "subsidies tool" in dyna clue?

In line 19 of main.fil there is an option to increase the probability for a given land use in specific locations. The idea is to model what  a subsidy or tax brake would have on a given land use.

For example, I want to model the effect of a subsidy for forestry plantations. A subsidy would increase the likelihood of a given pixel to be in forest use. I am trying to come up with some idea of how to estimate that change in probability and I wonder if anyone of you is doing that as well

In any case, I would also appreciate if someone could explain me what are the numbers that should follow the 1 ( switch on ) on line 19 of main file. According to the manual, if the switch is set to 1 it should be followed by "the fraction of the preference addition that is added to the probability as calculated in the regression". I do not understand what it means and I would appreciate help.

Happy week everyone!
 Daniela

Hi everyone,
I asked this question to professor Verburg and he replied ; "this is a weight that is multiplied with the values in the map, e.g, if the map gives a 1 to locations with the subsidy and the weight in line 19 is 0.2 the result is that 0.2 is added to (say land use 3) to the regression probability"
In that case line 19 is
1 0 0 0.2 or
1 0 0 1
and the specloc3 have a value of  0.2 in the locations (pixels) where you want to increase the probability for LU3

I hope this helps!
Daniela

Hello,
I faced the same problem long back. I could not find, where from the problem generated. But I solved it through manipulation.
I forgot, how I solved it. I think, this error can be avoided changing the coefficients of logistic regression value of that particular class.

Hope this will solve our problem.

Hi ,
If I remember well, I got to check that every cell has a number allocated. You can do that in arcsig with the raster calculator, command 'fill null".
I hope that helps

Hello Daniela,

I need help with a problem regarding Dyna-CLUE.
In the Dyna-CLUE tutorial (link attached below), at page 39,  in convert option, the first line of the file should specify respectively the maximum number of files that need to be converted in one run and the maximum number of observations in these files. The following lines should specify the full names of the files.

1. How decided
the maximum number of files that need to be converted ?

2. And what about the maximum number of observations in these files ?

http://www.ivm.vu.nl/en/Images/Exercises_tcm234-284019.pdf

I have checked the test file "alt.asc", which shows values from 0 to 2009, where the central pixels had high values and decreasing at the boundaries to 0.
Couldn't get it, how this file was generated and what basis.

Yes, I also have faced some problems while converting the files - At first, I did not get all my pixels in the stat file even if I select 100% of samples. Second I was not able to bring the dichotomous nature of the land classes in the stat file. So I have used ArcGIS.

Step-1: Convert the base map raster to points. So that you will get a set of points and a table attached to it.
Step-2: Now use "Extract Multi Values to Points" tool in ArcGIS. All the pixel values will be attached the point shape file.
Step-3: Export the database attached to that point shapefile.
Step-4: Now use the exported database for statistical analysis.
I hope it will help. Thanks.

Dear Suparno,
Thanks for the reply.
The procedure you have stated here, I am not sure whether it is correct or not.
If you open the "alt.asc" in the test data, you will find the values varied from 0 to 2009; however the LULC classes valued 0 to 4.

I am concerned with these:
1. How decided the maximum number of files that need to be converted ?
2. And what about the maximum number of observations in these files ?

Problem might be arrived due to demo version software or input data error.
Are you using the demo software or full version ? If full version, then my suggestions are: (a) check the nos rows, columns, cell size, X, Y co-ordinate, and extensions of all data. (b) whether demand is hac unit or not ! (c) cell size and grid size confusion (c) alloc1.reg file.

Best of good luck.

Problem 1:
Cov1_0.0 for Forest, Cov1_1.0 for Coconut plantation, Cov1_2.0 for Grassland, Cov1_3.0 for Rice fields,Cov1_4.0 for Others (mangrove/Beach/Villages etc.)
Where can we find these land use files? We need these files along with driving factors file to do statistical analysis in SPSS. Can we make these files by ourselves?
Problem 2:
I can't access to the Dyna-CLUE help menu even i have full version of it.
Problem 3:
What are age.* files?
Hopeful to get my answers. Thanking you.

Check the main file and the transition matrix. Be sure that the rows and cols are the same number of land uses. For example 115, indicates autonomous change after 15 years.

Hi researcher.

My name is PLAGBETO Hermann Arnaud and I am from Benin.

I'm currently doing my thesis on modeling the dynamics of land use. I use the dyna-Clue model.

I prepared all the data normally but after launch, the model runs in vain and shows me the following message: ERROR: no solution; Program terminated.

What should I do? Help me please

Thank you

Hi plagbeto.. i've encountered the same problem with you before.
I manipulated the iteration value in main parameters line 12.
0 20 50
If it still error then try larger value.

Reduce the inertial values, keep 1 for all conversion types in allow matrix. Modify the Demand file with less demand.

Hello Everyone,
I am repeatedly getting the problem - "too many constraints defined ". I have tried several different combinations of change matrix, elasticity values, iteration variables, but all gone in vain. Does anyone have an idea about this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

It says either "same land cover cannot change autonomous in two different land cover", or "no solution; program terminated" after 20000 iterations or before
The cell size is 100 ha and i have 2 driving factor, i have tried to removed all constraints but it has never worked yet

Hi,
I guess, there is a problem with your change matrix. It may not be complying the demand direction. Also, check the region.fil file, all values should be 0 .

Hello,

I have tried with different combinations in the change matrix and also with only 1 for all LU types but it doesn't work. I also have checked the region file as you said but it is ok
I feel that the problem is comming from the iteration variables, line 12 in main parameters, when I try with larger values it says " error: same land cover cannot change autonomous in two different new land covers" and when I try with fewer values calculated as they say in the manual
(1. Iteration mode. Options: 0, which means that convergence criteria are expressed as a percentage of the demand; 1, which means that convergence criteria are expressed as absolute values (units of demand, i.e., hectares.)
2. First convergence criterium: average deviation between demand and the actually allocated changes (default for iteration mode 0: 0.35% This percentage should minimally equal 2 cells difference between the allocated area and the demand divided by the number of land use types; for the absolute iteration mode at least the twice the cell area divided by the number of land use types).
3. Second convergence criterium: maximum deviation between demand and the actually allocated changes (default for iteration mode 0: 3% This percentage should minimally equal 1 cell difference between the allocated area and the demand for the land use type with the smallest demand, e.g. for a land use type with a demand of 200 ha and a cell area of 4 ha, the value should be minimally (4/200)*100% = 2%). For iteration mode 1: the value should be at least the area of one cell (default setting).)

the iterations goes until 20 000 and then it says "ERROR: no solution; program terminated".

In the manual they also say : "The iteration will continue until the convergence criteria (line 12 of the main parameter file) have been reached, e.g. the value of the penultimate column has to become lower than 3% and the value of the last column should be lower than 0.35%. If the convergence criteria are not reached within 20,000 iterations, CLUE-S terminates."

Do you know how to adjust the iteration variables so that the convergence criteria can be reached ?

Thank you
Clémentine

Hello Clémentine,
If you are in your initial stage of Dyna-CLUE modeling, I will suggest for test run with following:
Try  with very high avg. and max values in line 12, e.g. 10% and 30%.
If model runs successfully, then reduce these values gradually.
Also try to reduce the values of conversion elasticity.

If still model fails, then keep two lines in demand file for 0 and 1 year; changes the values of land cover areas
slightly compared to 0 year, and run the model. Then you go with your original data.

Dear  Fernando

In your main file, you can try by changing the following parameters:

Reduce the elasticity values, and increase the maximum average and individual difference values.

 elasticity of land use types: 1.00 0.70 0.80 0.80 0.80 0.80
 iteration mode: percentage
maximum average difference in demand allowed: 5.000000
maximum individual difference in demand allowed: 8.000000

Hello!
Have anyone had an error "Access violation at address 00402EA3 in module 'clues.exe'. Read of address 00000000"? The program terminates after its occurrence...
Also, what might be the reason for fraction 1.00000 for land use type 0 (and zeros for the others) in log file? Land covers in cov_all.0 have the same proportions as in the demand file for the initial year...

If you haven't found yet, this is caused either by raster error, or a regression coefficient that is too large (using distance to urban to predict urban cover for example).

For posterity because, as software develops beyond this older model the same problems seem to creep up for all of us. This group was useful in troubleshooting many of my own issues, so I think it would be wrong not to include list of errors I ran into and their solutions.

The 'Attribute Dimensions Exceeded' error may appear even if your data is within the programs stated capabilities (1200 by 1200 recommended) if you download the DEMO first, as you need the included .dll files, the DEMO CLUE file can sometimes OVERWRITE the full version if you are not careful even in separate folders. Check the file size.

If a 'Read of Address 0000000' is found there is an error in your alloc.1 file. It is not a computer issue and could be as simple as forgetting to specify which coefficient is for which variable.

The 'error: regression cannot be calculated due to large value' is caused by a raster error. Often this is a difference in the number/position of Data and Null cells between various inputs. Even a difference of One Cell between your cov_all, sc1gr and region* files can cause this issue to crop up and it may be no fault of your own and instead be an error caused by whatever GIS program you were using. This can be fixed by using raster calculator to identify the extra Null or Data values in your sets and/or clipping to the extent of a default raster. You can identify if this is indeed the cause by checking 'file check on' in the main CLUE window. Note you must do this for every test to check your files.

Sometimes 'no solution' issues are caused by being too restrictive with your land cover transitions. Loosen them, drop the elasticity values and increase your allowed error. Still having some issues here dependent on my scenario, but working through.

While the downloadable .hlp file is not accessible from most modern computers now, you can download browser extensions to translate them for you ad give you access to more information.

If all else fails, open the code using atom.io, or similar, search the error you are getting and check the matrix math going on behind the mask ass this can give you insight into what the program is trying to do at that point and you can back that out into what the problem could be.

If I come across any other similar tips I will post them here as well.

Hi,
The error "Sc1gr* file missing" can be for several things:
- You have to start with 0 : sc1gr0.fil.asc
- Check the third or fourth line of your main file and verify with your alloc file and your driving force files, respectively.
- Check your alloc file, maybe you wrote some number and doesnt correspond in your driving force files.
