dismo package significant slower than maxent.jar?

I am attempting to run the same model(s) that I have run in maxent.jar in R using the dismo package.

Using the maxent GUI the model usually takes ~5-10 minutes to run. So far the dismo package seems to take a lot longer to run.

Any ideas why this might be?

The dismo package is calling maxent.jar to run Maxent, so there is another level of code to be executed. R is slower than Java. This is likely the main reason why it's a bit slower.
