I am looking for a volunteer who wishes to get started  using the metal lathe. I have the need  to machine 12-15 pins for a project for the Mini Maker Faire.  I can do this but I thought in the spirit of Makers that I would offer  this task  to a fellow Maker.

I just performed a test cut and the lathe is set up for the job.  this is neither fancy or hard but it is sort of time consuming.
  1. The tasks are  cutoff the brass pin material (1/4 rod stock) using the rod shear.
  2.  Mark the rods with Dycum marker
  3. Turn down 2" of one end to a diameter
  4. Use a die to thread the other end.
We just printed a Dial indicator holder for the cross slide so setting in the diameter is fairly straight forward.

The feeds and speeds are already set to give a nice finish using the insert bit in the holder. I will explain the mechanics if the operator wants to know

Any person who is a paid member over 16 is eligible to do this work  and will be given more instruction in  lathe use as the time goes on.

I do need to have this done by end of day next Sunday  so Wednesday night Thursday night Saturday or Sunday are available for the work

Mahalo

I'm still gathering tooling for this machine or donations towards tooling for the shop in general.

Maui Makers is still looking for a champion for the TAIG Mini CNC Mill. we have  shop projects waiting but not enough time  to make.

We also have a need for someone to work on making our Machineable Wax and recycled Plastic material for the shop

Peter, I have some extra hss cutters and lantern style tool holders over here. They came with a basketcase 10" south bend. I can send some back with you after the maker faire or mail if you need anything in a rush.

Ross Thank you for the offer  but my lathe is a Jeweler's lathe  tiny  The cross feed nut is very small  I have a single Lantern holder already that cam with it  I want to make a solid type holder that canholdtwo  bits and maybe a small boring tool  I have a small assortment of 1/4" lathe bits I purchased a 6 pc insert  holder set with 1/4" sq shanks so we are in a reasonable shape for starting .

The lathe is a good start but my changegear assortment is missing most of the gears. My plans are to eventually have a second larger Lathe with a quick change arrangement

We just recieved  build out permission on the new Makerspace.  This is the first place it was announced.

I’d be interested in helping out.  Its been a few years since I ran a metal lathe and never one as small as this but good practice.

I just ordered the grommets last night  Buck has the tubes  need to open holes for support  will try out with pipe in the space ID of grommets is 3/16 OD is 5/16 probably need to open tube holes with step drill.

In Maker Style I'm  using  1/2" drill chuck for a 3 jaw in the lathe  (Headstock thread is 1/2-20 checked out runout on first part and it is within =/- 0.002"  which is good  this job is non-critical
