We are hosting a workshop THIS WEEKEND on making flour from Kiawe Pods…

Come learn from people on the cutting edge of the sustainable food movement. Learn how they are utilizing a nutritional and sustainable food source found all over Maui island and the State of Hawaii. Learn how kiawe tree pods can be harvested and ground into a flour with amazing health promoting properties: a highly nutritious superior energy food, both naturally sweet and diabetic friendly, naturally stable and easily stored for long periods.

There will a talk story time where experiences with kiawe bean pods to date will be shared, as well as the vision for the part this food can play in the local sustainable food movement. Followed by a short video from the Maui show, “Search Hawaii”, entitled “Wai'anae Gold"

Then, there will be a hands-on demonstration of how Waianae Gold "Aina Bars" are made, with plenty of opportunity for sampling... mmmm...

Check out the Wianae Gold website at: http://waianaegold.com

Presenters: Vince Dodge from Waianae Gold on Oahu. He has been a leader in bringing this important food stuff into public awareness. For much of the last 11 years he has: researched and visited with native peoples to gain knowledge of traditional kiawe practices, developed a network of kiawe pod harvesters, obtained effective flour milling hardware from Argentina, developed a processing system for making the pods into flour, invented a number of products featuring Kiawe flour, and established a marketing network that places these products in retail stores such as Down to Earth and Mana Foods.

Sunny Savage is a Maui wild harvester. She is a mother and author of the book “Wild Food Plants of Hawaii” and has been inspired to utilize the kiawe fruit in many ways. Sunny holds an MS in Nutrition Education and has traveled to all 7 continents, learning from plants and people along the way. She will bring stories of her experiences and samples of some of the delectable delicacies she has developed using kiawe flour. Check out her website at: http://www.sunnysavage.com

Yuji Taira is a fellow Maui harvester and a dreamer of the vision.

Sunny and Yuji have been the core of the Maui kiawe bean gathers. Come, connect with them, and prepare to join in the harvest this summer!
