Hey guys.. we are moving to Maui in January and I am really excited to have a space to hang out with people into tinkering with stuff.  My "real" job is a trader and I have been doing that for almost 10 years but I have always been into RC stuff, tinkering, hacking etc.  A year or so ago I launched a little experiment company exploring the use of aerial photography using drones (droneabove.com) and it has morphed more into a blog about toys now.  I have been thinking a ton about the different uses of drones and I can't stop thinking about drone delivery (even before Amazon mentioned it..!   Would anyone be interested in experimenting with me on this when I get there?

Welcome to the community Justin!

Coincidentally, one of our members (Brett Christiansen) showed off his new RC quadcopter at the meeting last night.... and on my way to the meeting I saw some folks flying a quadcopter over the cane fields near Hali'imaile.  I think there will be some interest here. ;-)

Hi Justin, thanks for introducing yourself.  Glad to hear you are moving to Maui and we will have access to a drone authority (beside Jerry who worked with them on the commercial side).

How about this use of drones: deliver mai tai's on the beach off whalers village (in plastic cups, after id's checked, charge deposit on cup so no trash, presuming it is legal to drink on that beach).  I can pitch this to Leilani's or Hula Grill.  The PR would be killer for Maui, the bar/restaurant and Maui Makers.   If the patron's digital wallet doesn't have too much sand in it, they could take bitcoins haha.  There are many potential uses: wedding photography..etc.

As Jerry said, Brett showed off his new DJI Phantom 2 last night, pretty cool.  Also, a member just got a DTG printer so that will be cool to check out.

We are working on securing a permanent space currently but our meetings are at our brand new science and engineering building at UHMC are going great.

If any of us can make your move easier, say the word.  Brett is a (great) realtor and can send video of any neighborhoods/houses you may be looking at.

Aloha,
Brian

Aloha All,
Great idea with the Mai Tias Brian. I think the LC (Liquor Commission) would crush it as soon as they caught wind of it though, maybe start with virgin drinks.

Can I add my Drone Idea?
"The Shark Sentry"
A drone with floats on its feet. Sits on the ocean surface, just off shore and monitors the area for sharks. Use existing tech. for fish radar/sonar to detect large bodies (sharks) lurking below. If it floats out of the area GPS will tell it to reset to the pre designated position. Maybe an alarm/alert sound when the large dark object comes within range.
Maybe some state or county funding because tourism is huge here and dying on vacation is bad press (!!)

There is already a patent on a floating buoy that does the same and a little more.
Will people swim with pagers attached to their suits?

I sure hope those meeting move to Kihei, someday.

Thanks everybody,
Erik

Aloha guys,

My name is Jason Toth. I live in Vancouver BC and Lahaina Maui. I work in the film industry and we specialize in UAV's (Drones) www.rvrd.com We not only use them but also manufacture them for highend applications as well (film, lidar, thermal imaging, research - we are building 2 waterproof version for Hawaii University & Whale Trust).

The UAV's I'll be bringing on island Jan 1st are not like anything that is on maui, for example the heavy lift costs around $100k when the camera is mounted.

We have:
- waterproof versions, that can land/take off in water (light lift)
- heavy lift we use for feature film work (we shot Imax last season in Lahaina) that lift 35LBS for 10 minutes w. a Red Epic camera).
- long flight version that also lifts the Red Epci 35LBS for 30 minutes - also used for LiDar and Thermal Imaging

If you want to chat give me a call - might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Jason, that is great stuff you are doing and thanks for saying hello.  Maui Makers drone dimension has a chance to take off (srry..) with you and Justin on island and further expands our maker tech.

We are working to start upcoming arduino classes but it would be great to have a drone gathering.  Next year, with potential new board members and with both of your guys' input, lets do something to educate and show off our drone capabilities.  Maybe even make a killer video showing our old home, Cole's HAESH project and if we have one, new home.

Erik E- yes the LC would be a deal killer for sure.  It would be entertaining to see the people that outlaw dancing in bars outside of the taped areas reaction to drink serving drones.

Regarding the shark ideas, since we have tackers on about 10 of them, we could put trackers on more then, when a shark nears a certain distance from shore, launch drone from a beach with blinking bright LED's and maybe audio and have it hover over the shark via wifi or NFC.  Not sure how to do it when shark is underwater though.  I would easily see a drone hovering above the water.

The attacks rarely happen to one who is snorkeling or diving but beachgoers and those who can't easily look in and around the waters get hit.

Hello Jerry, plans changed as they always do in Film. Just arrived Maui and would love to know whats happening on Island regarding any UAV/Drone/UAS/Multicopter "or what ever ya want to call it". Brought my whole collection of drones from a water proof model to one that lift 100lbs :) Take care Jason!

Have you seen the vids of people doing light painting with quad copters?

I have some blinky tape on a stick (http://blinkinlabs.com/blinkytape/) it would be fun to hang these from a quadcopter or three and paint some rainbow words over the Mystic Island Festival... just for the lulz.
