Calculating equations

I am looking for a JavaScript library for writing and then calculating equations.

MathJax seems to display equations well. It would be nice to calculate with variables.

Is MathJax simply for displaying? Is there a suggested way(function, linked library, extension) to calculate MathJax equations?

That's correct.

There isn't but I would personally recommend to look at MathJS, http://mathjs.org/

I have seen MathJS before. I do intend to use it, but I was looking more for something to parse equations. I am guessing this is not available. I might have to work on it myself.
