Dear All,

Can Any one Explain me what is the difference between API 5L PSL-1 and PSL-2.What is the signefecance and where we need to use the specific PSL.

Dear Prakash
The differences are given in API 5L in the end pages.
The application depends on the project spec, client spec etc. Product Specification Level(psl) 2 is stringent.

Please refer to API table in appendix, It is the level of inspection on PSL2 pipes that make it diferent from PSL1. PSL2 is mostly used in pipeline where visula inspection of pipen after construction/during hydrotest is of great concern. PSL 1 are used either for structure or can be used for plant piping where visual inspection during construction is not a concern. API doesnot make mendatory to have MTC for PSL1 pipe, since most of the API pipes are dual cartified you can ask for MTC from trader/manufacturer.

Chandra

PSL is "Product Specification Level".In case of PSL-1 impact testing is not mandatory and in case of PSL2 impact testing at 0 deg C is mandatory. There is a difference in Chemical composition requirements between PSL1 and PSL2.In case of PSL1 Yield Stress and UTS demands "min" value whereas in case of PSL2 there is a range of "min" and "max" for YS and UTS.

PSL-2 has more stringent testing requirments. Refer to API 5L which details the differences. It is common practice to go with PSL-2 requirments as default unless requested by the client.

Hi,

There is lot of differnces b/w PSL1 & PSL2
PSL 2 has got more stringent requirement than PSL 1 like impact requirement, etc
For detail difference refer Appendix J of API 5L

Dear Parakash

as mentioned in API 5L the main difference between PSL2 and PSL 1 that PSL2 can
resist low temperature services , so impact test is mandatory for PSL2, also you find
some chemical analysis  changes and related mechanical properties between PSL1 and PSL2

In the preparation of this second edition of ISO 3183, the technical committee recognized that there are two
basic levels of standard technical requirements for line pipe and, therefore, agreed to establish requirements
for two product specification levels (PSL 1 and PSL 2). Level PSL 1 provides a standard quality level for line
pipe. Level PSL 2 has additional mandatory requirements for chemical composition, notch toughness and
strength properties and additional NDE. Requirements that apply to only PSL 1 or to only PSL 2 are so
designated. Requirements that are not designated to a specific PSL designation apply to both PSL 1 and
PSL 2. A table comparing this edition of ISO 3183 with the with the predecessor International Standard
ISO 3183 (all parts) and API Spec 5L and used in the harmonization of these documents is given for
information in Annex M.
