Hi Folks,

Euploea is a genus of milkweed butterflies [related to the monarch] residing in Asia, Oceania, and Australia. Because of their black ground color, they go by the common name "crows". There are four species in Taiwan. The Striped Blue Crow, Euploea mulciber barsine, can have prominent blue reflections from scales on its forewings. Unfortunately, dorsal basking is rare. On May 21, 2016, this individual from the butterfly enclosure at the Taiwan Zoo's Insectarium was kind enough to "open up" long enough for me to experiment with visualizing the blue reflections. As you can see, they are very sensitive to lighting conditions.

Only six pictures in this set.

Cheers,
Frank
