machaon / polyxenes complex for sure. It most certainly is not ssp. asterius.

Hi, Matt…

Would you consider walking me through why it’s not Asterius? I’m certainly not asking because I have any opinion about it. Unfortunately, my decision tree goes something like:

1. It’s black
2. It has tails

Hopefully there’s more to it than that! It would just be helpful to know more about how you reached that conclusion.

I saw a small yellow swallowtail yesterday in Billerica, it was moving way too fast for any better view or ID or for a picture.

I thnk I saw a sulfur a day or two ago, same locality, other than that the only butterflies I've seen are the ubiquitous cabbage whites.
