Hello all,

We have another exciting announcement for you. The Mattapan Line (the trolley line that runs between Ashmont and Mattapan Stations) is the final rapid-transit service that we operate that does not yet have real-time data available in our API. That is about to change! We have worked with the Vehicle Maintenance department to install GPS in the Mattapan trolleys, and will be producing locations and predictions data in our API.

Before we roll out this new data in our production API, we'll be making it available in the test API for about a week. You can take a look using queries such as these:

Please note that this is a test environment, so we do not guarantee that data will be available 100% of the time. We hope that you will use this data to test out how your apps will look with live Mattapan data, and please let us know of any issues that you notice with the data. As we get closer to a production launch, we will post here with a specific date and time.

Sincerely,

Developer@MBTA

That's awesome! Will the Mattapan route service be available in the performance API as well?

Thanks,

Patrick

Yes, Mattapan data will also be available in the performance API calls.

Quick question... I think it's been years (or even decades) since the Mattapan PCC cars have been operated in multiple-unit service... at least in revenue service.

If there were to be a two-car PCC train on the Mattapan line, would that show up as one train / trip with the multiple vehicle IDs in vehicle_label or would it show up as two trains/trips simply close together?

Thanks!

Good question Stefan! A two-car train would not be handled by the current software (which is to say, it would appear as two trains close together). Luckily, there are no plans to train together Mattapan cars for the foreseeable future.
