Dear developers and other group members,

We wanted to spread the word here about a request for information we're making to transit-industry vendors. Because the request is through a formal process, we unfortunately are not able to answer questions about it here, so this is just an announcement. (In the interest of fairness to any vendors who might respond, all questions about it go through one channel so everyone gets the same answers.)

Today the MBTA released a Request For Information (RFI) under the title "Bus Location Instant Tracking System" (BLITS.)

The MBTA is interested in supplementing its existing bus tracking systems to make vehicle positions available to tracking systems with greater frequency and reduced latency. Currently, the MBTA’s bus fleet has a Computer Aided Dispatching / Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) system that tracks vehicle locations using a combination of GPS and dead reckoning and reports the vehicle’s location approximately every 60 seconds through a data radio communication network.

To improve upon this, the Authority is interested in implementing a low-interval (high-frequency), low-latency vehicle tracking system to be installed on all revenue buses in the MBTA fleet. The Authority would like to learn about products on the market that may achieve this goal. The Authority also seeks to learn about any other real-time data, in addition to vehicle locations, provided by such systems that could assist in improving service delivery and/or maintenance.

More information about the RFI, including what what we're looking to find out, how to ask questions, and how to respond, can be found at the Massachusetts COMMBUYS website under bid number BD-18-1206-40000-42502-20129 .

Again, we remind you that any questions about this RFI must go through the link above, in the interest of fairness to all vendors. Thanks for your attention.

Sincerely,
developer@mbta
