On Masculinities, Latin America, and the Global Age.
Special Issue of Letras Hispanas

The present set of essays seeks to further the study of Latin American masculinities as a productive trajectory in the broader field of gender. Masculinity as a subject position and/or identity, furthermore, gains particular importance in the Global Age, one in which local-national gender orders are increasingly breached and pulled into tension by cultural homogenization. Raewyn Connell’s theorizations of transnational masculinities, for example, evidence a point of entry into this debate. Addressing these concerns, possible questions that this collection seeks to tackle include: What are the aesthetic compromises behind the writing and/or framing of masculinities? How do masculinities engage or organize gender systems? What insights into the theorizations of globalization can masculinities provide? What affective registers and circulations emanate from the imaging of masculinities?

The essays in this collection will interrogate the plural valences of gender construction, paying particular attention to how notions of the global and local impact aesthetic and poetic manifestations of masculinities. Scholars are invited to write on cinematic or textual artifacts that examine the construct, praxis, and phenomenology of masculinities in contemporary Latin America. Contributors may, furthermore, seek linkages between disparate authors and movements not typically discussed together, and probe the interstitial spaces in critically canonical works that have otherwise fallen to the wayside of popular criticism.

Articles are due December 15th, 2014. Tentative date of publication is Fall 2015.
