Ouch!

But he obviously is an expert and had a set of expectations!

Notable quotes:
  • [Google engineers] do not understand best practices in map compilation
  • I gave up my editing career after these three attempts
Ok, I am not a professional mapper, but I am paid to kaizen my normal work until it cries for mercy and I try to bring the same to GMM.  To me this guy is more like the mainframe guy from 20 years ago who is comfortable with what he knows, somewhat smug with that knowledge like any witch doctor with secret skillz, and can't recognize the future value of this emerging tech.  See also Microsoft.

Which is not to say I wouldn't appreciate contributions from him and others.  See also my proposal to establish relationships with national cartographic agencies.

Agree with your comments Rich.

But i thought like many of the other American mappers, he just wanted a quick bang for the buck. But thats how i have experienced US too...everything should be just eaaasy...or the consumer will go to the other guy!

I would have appreciated if he looked at MM as a tool holistically and see despite its shortcomings (which mappers have borne with) how it has helped put the developing world on the map. But that historic connection and the contributions of map maker are surprisingly lost on most American reviewers, and maybe the Google team is to take the blame here for not highlighting their accomplishments in the parts of the world.

Some times when you have nothign to start with, any thing is good..even if its a product with shortcomings. But if you are spoiled for choice (which in this case would be OSM or other pro grade tools) then one will complain!

Lets see if he shows up here and has a change of perspective.

Second part of the story: http://blog.telemapics.com/?p=374

I haven't read ant new details in it, but the two stories do give a good list of reasons why many people start with mapping in Map Maker, get disappointed and go away. We should thank Michael for taking the time for writing this down. Most just leave Map Maker and we never know they even existed as a wannabe mapper.

I completely agree Umbarao. I'm starting to feel in that same boat. The review process, and bugs in the review system, make it a pain to map.
