Legend in Layout Designer

I feel this may be one of those ridiculous questions that gets answered in 10 seconds.

simply I've created a legend in the legend designer and I want to add it within the layout designer.

How does one do this?

It's important to stress here I am using the Layout Designer not Layout (Where I would use a frame)

You select a frame with a map, right click and pick Add Legends.

 

Note that working with legends in the layout designer window is a bit different from working with legends in the classic layout window. You actually don’t need to create a Legend Designer widnow first, you basically design your entire layout including legend frames directly in the Layout Designer window

When I do this using Scaled Layout I find that the formatting I have created in the Legend Designer in the Map window earlier is not there when I need to recreate my legend in the layout window. Titles revert to their table names, font sizes change, etc.... The only workaround I have found is to add another frame to the layout and insert the map window again. This time my formatted legend comes in exactly as it appears in the Legend Designer in the Map Window. I then can move the legend where I like but have to move the second layout window out of the way for printing. I am using the new 64-bit bundle by the way. 

Any others have the same problem?

Hi Aaron,

There are a couple different ways to get legends into a Layout Designer window. 

1. When you pull in an existing Map window that already has a Legend Designer window with legends, a copy of those legends are also brought along and placed next to the Map frame. The legends are an exact copy of what existed the Legend Designer (which you already have found out). In fact, both the Map frame and Legend (frames) are exact copies of the Map and its associated Legend Designer windows.

2. When you already have a Map frame in a Layout Designer, right click on it and in the context menu there is an option to add legends. These legends are created from scratch according to your Legend Preferences for how titles are created, what fonts to use, etc.

In the 64 bit version of MapInfo Pro, there has also always been a Legend button on the LAYOUT tab in the Insert group. When you select a map frame in the Layout Designer the Legend button on the TAB will become enabled.

In both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions, If you activate the map in the Layout Designer (double click on it) the MAP tab (or Map menu for 32 bit) also has an option to insert legends that becomes enabled.

So what has happened here is if you work on creating a legen in the legend designer you cannot add it as a frame - which is what most people have done in the past....please can we add this back to add the legend you have created oin legend designer in a new frame in the layout window....

Currently, the easiest way to get the content from an existing Legend Designer window into a Layout, is to add the map that the Legend Designer refers to to the

Layout. This will also insert the content from the Legend Designer window next to the inserted map.
