Hi,

In MapInfo 10 / 10.5 how do you get into the licensing system to change the serial number / activation code?

One of our clients has been using one of our serial numbers / activation codes while he was waiting for his permanent code to arrive from Pitney Bowes Business Insight. Now he has got his proper code he needs to give me back mine. So you can deactivate by using Help>Licensing>Transfer Licence. However, when he starts it up again it goes straight into ‘Do you want to Activate your software?’ and then re-activates using our numbers. He says he can’t find any option that lets him input the new serial number and activation code.

I know there is a way and that you do not have to do an uninstall and re-install.

Your help is welcome!

Thanks

Tim

Tim,
The serialnumber and activation is stored in the Registry.
So your client has to replace these numbers with his own.
They can be found some where under SOFTWARE\MapInfo.
Maybe the easiest is to search for the serial number you borrowed him.

Hi Tim,

I always get the evaluation period in 30 days after transfer the license back to the activation server. Then when I want to re-activate that, normally MIPro will ask about the activation method (Automatic or Email) > using email activation > there is edit button that helps us to edit the serial number and access code. Doesn't your client find the same things?

Hi Tim

The Serial Number and Activation Code are stored in the Windows Registry.
So if you were to use regedit and navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE  >SOFTWARE  >MAPINFO
>Professional  >1050
and you should see your SN and activation code which you could edit
(take a backup....)
