We'll still continue to use the google group, Nic. We'll post classes on here and general announcements and it will still remain a place for good maker discussions. The Discourse site is largely focused at members for things that our long-neglected wiki was previously used for. If the Discourse site starts to become the home of a lot of the content on the google group that is useful to non-members then we'll open up a public forum on there and shut down the google group, but I don't expect that to happen for a while. Vancouver Hack Space has been using Discourse for a while and has shut down their external mailing list, so that may be the way we head eventually, but I don't think we're there yet.

I'm not really a full member (I have no money to pay each month) but would like to keep up on info, and courses and such, and do occasional drop in stuff on open house nights etc.

What should I do?

Nooo! Nobody has been sent an invitation yet because it was going to be done in stages. I want to avoid having ~ 100 signups all at once needing manual matching to the member list. Invitations will go out over the next few days, but 10 or 20 at a time.

Hi all,

Just a reminder that all Makerspace members need to be signed up on the new Discourse site at talk.makerspace.ca since that is the current way of contacting our membership about important things (such as the upcoming Annual General Meeting).

If any members have not received their talk.makerspace.ca signup email, hopefully someone in the know can chime in below with the best way to get in touch to do that.

Any reason this isn't a TLS encrypted site? Are we really expecting people to login over HTTP?

Might I suggest: https://letsencrypt.org/
