2 Huge sci-fi like breakthroughs were announced recently:

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign created a 3d printer like device that can make 14 classes of small molecules.
In other words it will soon be possible to create many types of basic chemical compounds in ones home easily:

This is massively significant for many reasons. For one it means that 3d printer like systems will soon be able to make almost anything from raw materials,
as they will be capable of producing most of the chemical materials needed. For another the pharmaceutical industry could one day be in a situation
similar to what the proprietary software industry is in right now.

In the second breakthrough researchers from Japan have succeed in being the first to wirelessly transmit and receive a large amount of power a large distance.
This means that eventually one of the most anticipated space commercialization projects could happen, solving earths energy needs with solar
cells in orbit transmitting their power back to earth.
