Welcome back Damon! ;-)
Thinkbox’s printers are prohibitively expensive to use- at least the fancy ones are. Their low end printers are apparently 15 cents per gram of filament, and CPL’s are the bargain rate of 5 cents per gram. For reference, the part we’re currently printing (the “XY Sled”, of which it uses four) is approximately 77 grams each according to the estimate in my slicing software.
I am kind of trying to do this with the DIY/crowdsourced approach. I figure there are probably some folks on the list with printers at home that might want to help with my crazy quest...
We can get the parts done on our Prusa i3 clone, it’s just taking a while. Once we get through the really big parts, we’ll probably be able to do a bunch of smaller stuff all at once.
I’m also working on getting our MP Select Mini back to operational status, but it’s taking time. The replacement of its dead electronics with a RAMPS setup was successful. It did print a lego keychain the other day, but I’m thinking its extruder has issues, because anything more complicated than a lego isn’t working very well. I’m going to try swapping out the nozzle, and if that doesn’t work I’ll replace the heatbreak tube. If that doesn’t work, I’ll replace the whole extruder...
Anyone want to try to get either of our old Mendel Prusas running again?(mostly kidding- they’re beyond all hope…) Or help turn our old Stratasys XY stage into a printer? We’ve got most of the parts we would need- we just need some people with the drive to make it happen.
