Last night, on 1/10/17, we discussed designs, controllers, materials, and engineering for modifying our Paint Pendulum with a sort of paint head and controller that influences which colors dispense during different parts of the drawing.

Our latest design consists of an actual paint can as the pendulum:
  • Inside the can is a 5 lb. circular barnell weight, with paint tubes passing through the hole in the weight, and through a hole in the bottom of the can.
  • One solenoid per color will act like liquid valves between the dispensing tubes and some kind of paint reservoir, which may be slightly pressurized.
  • The solenoids will be controlled through an ethernet cable, which will pass power through a user switch bank located safely outside the pendulum arc.  The switch bank may consist of two switches per solenoid wired in parallel- one could be thrown to allow power (and paint) without having to keep touching it, and another could be a momentary switch.  So, users could flip the switches and/or push the buttons to "play" the paint a bit like a tiny keyboard,

I'll be in tonight to wire the solenoids to some CAT5.  If we get the switches and paint cans by tonight, I also hope to wire them up too.

Suggestions for a user switch bank: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Broan-Three-15-Amp-20-Amp-Total-3-Function-Single-Pole-Rocker-Switch-Wall-Control-in-White-P66W/100345534

I've seen Emily a week and a half ago, and she told me she owes Bob an email about Brite Winter.  Meanwhile, I REALLY don't want to put off working on this project in the hopes of Day Glo providing us with a paint can.

I REALLY think we should get 1 Gal. paint bucket to cut a hoole into the bottom of, and start mounting the weight and wired solenoids into.
I suggest something like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-1-gal-Metal-Paint-Bucket-and-Lid-96601/100038785

It would look nice and thematic if we were to mount the aforementioned switch bank into the lid of a 1 or 2 Gal. bucket.  I can lend a piece of iron pipe with flanges on both ends, so that we can make a freestanding User Interface for the Switch Bucket.

Hey Ross,

we Actual switched to a paint pail the 5 lbs weight did fit a standard paint can.
ive epoxied the weight in the pall and made a plate for the solenoids. I did get in 100' of clear tubing and have a air regulator ready to go.
