Hi all,  just wanted to share this story. We are super proud of this installing at UNE. The story details some of the amazing student effort that resulted in installing bird friendly glass in this beautiful building--importantly, there was a great deal of community support as well, including from Jeanette & Derek Lovitch and from the board members of York County Audubon.

Noah and all,

A heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved with this project at UNE. And kudos especially to the students that made this happen. Birds will be saved and UNE will have a great demonstration of the beauty of bird-friendly design. It should serve as an example for future projects throughout the state.

While cities like Portland continue to vastly expand the amount of reflexive glass surfaces, we know there is a better way. Many cities and other institutions are adopting bird-friendly guidelines, and bird-friendly design now even counts towards LEED certification. 

At the federal level, there's the Federal Bird-Safe Buildings Act that was recently introduced into Congress, that would require bird-friendly design to be incorporated into new Federal, tax-payer funded buildings: https://abcbirds.org/article/bill-make-new-federal-buildings-bird-friendly/

Support is growing, but unfortunately, many politicians are failing to support it, including Maine's two senators. In a recent response to an email from Senator King's office, the bill was dismissed as a costly mandate. He can be reached here:

Let's all continue to fight to stem the death toll of up to 1 Billion birds a year that are killed at windows.
