Hi Folks,

As Brian announced, Mt. SAC is in the exploration phase of a Innovation Makerspace grant.   The college was selected to spend the next 6 months figuring out what a Makerspace is.  At this point the lead people are me (engineering physics faculty), the Mt SAC assistant dean of natural science and the Mt SAC assistant dean of Art.    The ADs visited two makerspaces already, one that is attached to Northrop and a Techshop.  These give a very different vision of a makerspace then the community driven MAGlab, 23B, crashspace etc.

At the end of our 6 month process, Mt. SAC is applying for the larger phase of the innovation makerspace grant. I would like to see MAGLab be the major community partner in this and build in to the grant, funds to expand the space both physically and in membership.

I have invited the ADs to come see MAGlab as a community partner in the Innovation Makerspace project. Last week I brought another of the committee members Igancio Sardinas (Chair of Architecture, Manufacturing and Industrial Design) to visit the space.  His comments were extremely positive as he actually does wood and metal fabrication at his shop in Upland.  However, we aren't going to compete with the corporate shops on cleanliness, organization etc.  We brainstormed what we could do to put the best foot forward for MAGLab. What came to the top was that we emphasize the entrepreneurial nature of the space and highlight different member projects.

Brainstorming on Tuesday we came up with a list of member projects. What we would like to have from each member is the following:
  1. Example of product or physical manifestation of project  (If your project is web based(Jeff, Rosa, Hong, Ben), send me a link so we can have a laptop / tablet setup accessing it)
  2. 1 page broadsheet about the project (I will print these in color and put them in frames for folks to have)
The plan is to set these up around the shop so that we can focus the attention of the ADs on the benefits of community instead of dirt and paint. I picture that we have a half dozen things setup, ~3 in the conference room, 1 in the electronics room, 2 in the main areas.   I don't want to do a major cleanup of the space!      I plan to do some work clearing some of the work tables in the main tool area.

Attached is an example of a broadsheet.

I will be at the meeting on Tuesday or folks can post if they have more questions,
mmason

I just watched an Xploration Station show that I DVR'ed last weekend in
which such high-powered lasers can also treat metal surfaces to become
highly water-repellent. Unfortunately at this stage of development it's
very slow and expensive, but watching water drops literally bounce off of a
piece of metal was fascinating.

Would it be worthwhile to include group projects like the kitchenette and
the older lightsight?

When are the Mt. Sac administrators going to come to the space?

Hong,

The administrators will come on Jan. 3. The kitchenette may not be
worthwhile, we need things that seem new and interesting.

The kitchenette is just a furniture project.

Mason, I urge you to provide feedback on what criteria the project needs to
satisfy to enhance our chances of getting the grant.
