Does anyone here do backyard foundry stuff?

I have an unhealthy desire to melt stuff but I'm a little afraid to venture into the world of hairdryers and really hot fires on my own.

Start with pewter at first to get a feel for the process, it has a low melting temperature and is really cheap. Do you have any specific ideas in mind for a first project?
