By popular demand I'm bringing in some folks to help me teach some basic blacksmithing at LVL1.  We're looking at Saturday, the 15th of October and it may be weather-dependent as we need to do this outdoors.  We're trying to find prices on materials so we can set a price for the event; we need to cover the cost of steel and coal and such.  We may have a propane furnace as well.

So what I need from you is a measure of interest and what sort of projects you think you might want to try.

The steel roses I made take some time so you may want to think of something simpler.

One idea: nail-swords.  Turn nails into little swords in a few minutes!

Thoughts?

That's an expensive piece of steel and several days worth of work (even with a trip-hammer that's a lot of work) so...  Probably not a good beginner project.  ;-)

Will there be a belt grinder available?  I have a Seax in progress that I need to grind a better bevel into.

OK; so there's enough interest for us to do this!  We will start at noon and go on for a few hours.  Obviously this has to be outdoors and weather may be a factor.  Wear cotton clothes like you would for welding; anything that might melt against your skin should be avoided.  Close-toed shoes are a must.

The nail-swords are a pretty easy project to do and should take less than half an hour.  We're asking for $10 for these lessons to help cover the cost of coal and diesel (to bring in all the stuff from the shop) and such.  Donations are welcome as well.

In addition to the nail-swords other projects can be made depending on time, materials, etc. at whatever cost we come up with at the time; sorry I can't be more specific.

There will also be an opportunity to see some blade forging as a demonstration.  Tips would be welcome but it's free to watch/ask questions.

Thanks for your interest everyone; I'll have it on the calendar shortly.
