Curious to see how much interest there'd be in a workshop on the
ESP8266. For those who haven't heard of it, the ESP8266 is a
microcontroller with integrated WiFi and only costs between $2 and $6
depending on who you get it from and what module you get. Compared to an
Arduino it's actually a lot more powerful in every respect, but it's no
where near as beginner friendly to learn. I think the workshop would be
for people at least a little familiar with the Arduino (enough to blink
an LED) and the end result would be an ESP hosting a website that lets
you toggle an LED or two on and off, and going over some of the nuances
of how programming is different from the Arduino.

Not sure if this is even a question… This is something that should go to the top of the list, and to become a real Class   (Eventbright and all)

Because this is something that should make pretty much all hackers/makers/nerds get that tingly feeling…

Looks like we have enough interest. How does Thursday the 28th work for
everyone? I actually have about 20 of the ESP-01 modules on hand to
loan out for a workshop, so nobody needs to commit to buying anything.
But feel free to bring your own if you have something different, for the
purposes of this class pretty much any esp8266 module will do, that
includes the NodeMCU and Huzzah. And can anyone tell me how to go about
getting this put on the calendar once a date is agreed upon?

Actually think I'll shoot for Feb 11, that'll give people time to plan
ahead to attend.

I think the Seeed Studio WIO Link looks like a cool implementation of the ESP8266:

It would be cool to have a Friday workshop followed by a ESP8266 hackathon on Saturday.

Greg,

Before the event, let us know what software and any hardware that would be needed for the class.

Date set for Feb 11, 7pm, it should be appearing on the LVL1 calendar/Eventbrite soon.  Cost is free.  I will be providing the ESP-01 modules, FTDI modules, jumper wire, batteries, etc.  You will need to bring a laptop, I will be demoing using Windows but the software has versions available for Linux/Mac, if your laptop requires installing drivers for the FTDI chip or anything else, I would expect you to know how to do that on your own as well as figure out which COM port it got assigned to.  The class will be geared toward people who are at least a little familiar with an Arduino, (enough to blink and LED, and modify someone else's code).  Most of the programming we'll go over will be in the LUA programming language, and some in the C programming language, I will not assume any familiarity with those languages.

You won't be able to take the modules used in the class home.  If you want, you can bring your own, here is the same module for $4 on Amazon.  Pretty much any other ESP8266 module will do too, like the NodeMCU, Huzzah, and ESP-xx modules, just make sure that if your module requires soldering that you have leads soldered before the class as we won't be doing any soldering as part of this class.

Here is the software you should have downloaded and installed before the class:

NodeMCU Flasher:
https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flasher/tree/master/Win32/Release

Esplorer (requires Java)
http://esp8266.ru/esplorer/

Arduino ESP8266 Plugin:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-huzzah-esp8266-breakout/using-arduino-ide

Also download the latest version of the NodeMCU firmware:

Would the FTDI modules for this board be the same as the ones for the arduinos?

Maybe the Chinese clone versions.  I remember there was a bit of a fiasco around the drivers for official FTDI chips vs the clones a while ago, I never had an issue with any of mine even though I'm pretty sure they're all clones.

When you pop the Eventbrite, DO include a cost. Our esteemed treasurer can advise on the specific amount, but it should be enough to cover hotel services, and to ensure that people have a little “skin” in the game.

Eventbright opens the class to the public (this is good)

Traditionally, we charge an amount (X) and let members know a “Secret-Code” that can be entered to remove some (X/2 or more) of the cost for members.

I'm pretty committed to the free sharing of knowledge whenever possible.  That's how the ESP8266 came to be what it is to the maker community.  There might be some no shows, but if the class fills up, I'll just have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or how many ever sessions it takes to make sure everyone gets a chance.

When I ran the free Arduino class, I only had 3 people out of 20 not show. Shouldn't be a problem. I'll have the eventbrite up first thing tomorrow morning.

Looks like there's 4 spots left. If there's enough demand I can do a
second one (or someone else can). Also a handful of people said they
were interested in a weekend Hack-a-thon, which I hope someone picks up
the ball on, as my weekends are usually pretty packed.
