Just saw some new photos posted on flickr... noticed a lack of laser cutter in the corner. *scaredface* Has it simply been moved? In process of relocating? Or is it gone for good?

I must cut matboard, cardboard and masonite with fiyah!

Thanks.

I heard secondhand that landlord permission has been granted. Is the laser cutter back up and running? Asking for a friend. :)

There is no friend.

They did, tentatively. We have to implement a few more features before they will allow use to use it again.

Still unavailable. RFID system is being built by Tyler and we're working with the landlords on a plan to install a tall vent pipe.

The RFID reader has been installed, the RFID boards are nearly complete (we're ordering some more parts; short a couple of diodes, etc.) and will be installed soon (Tyler ordered the parts this morning).

We're waiting on a FAP to pass to cover installation of the exhaust pipe.  Once approved it will need to be installed.

What part numbers are still needed?

Could save you some time there, if they're generic enough.

Part have been ordered. We don't need these extra parts to move forward with the laser. The parts are for spare boards.

Looked at the threads above, but didn't see an update on the big laser cutter.  Any update?

I may need to learn how to use the smaller one.  Want to laser cut a name on a mouse trap for my kiddo who's making a mouse trap car for school.  :)

Laser has been moved. New location was approved by the landlords. Chimney needs to be installed. Waiting on contractor. RFID system has been assembled. Needs firmware to be modified to log when members swipe their RFID card.

A member will have to badge non-members in and will be responsible if the non-member abuses the laser cutter in any way. On the whole, I don't think this policy will restrict non-members from being able to use the laser cutter.

Good to know!

Hate that something must have occurred to warrant this.  But I know I can work with those boundaries.

Has anyone looked into setting up some kind of per-use insurance fee for major breakdowns on the more expensive pieces of equipment? It would spread the risk for everyone. On the farm, if you borrow a machine and it breaks while you're using it, you fix it. I seldom borrow equipment for that reason. I've been burned a time or two. It wouldn't be fair to the person who just happened to be using a machine, when an expensive component failed,to have to cover 100% of the cost to repair it. Just a thought.

Well… Since there needs to be a Member in the space any way, the only people who would be negatively impacted would be non-members who are unknown to members. (If you are not known, you should not ask someone to be responsible for your actions)

J -- the intent is to verify that the person using the equipment has some level of competence with it. We have had a few too many incidents where members and nonmembers have left equipment and areas in non usable states. This allows us to review the last few users to understand what went wrong so it can be fixed. Otherwise it is a guessing game.

Unless it is malicious misuse, the organization would not ask for someone to pay for a broken tool.

I understand, and agree, that there needs to be more care and accountability where the use of the more dangerous, complex and expensive pieces of equipment are concerned. If I were to break something, however, I would feel obligated to pay to fix it myself even if the group's policy was to cover the costs. What I proposed would serve to mitigate my guilty feelings while spreading the financial risks for myself and the group.

Bringing ideas over from the ShopBot thread... an equally precise and expensive machine...

I love the idea of earning a "trained/certified" non-member badge/designation. I would not like having to get a member to "take responsibility" for me using any tool. Let alone 2 expensive items like the laser cutter and shopbot. (The two I'm most interested in.) I am certainly willing to attend and even pay to get training/certification for both of those machines, so that if a member logs me in(under the current protocols), they can feel confident that I am versed in their use. Though I'd much rather have my own 'certification badge' to log myself into those machines.

The need for and benefits of memberships is completely understood. However, I am only able to get to the space once, MAYBE twice, a month. That means $25-$50 per visit for me, which is far too much. Perhaps there could be a discussion of a tiered(per visit/set # of visits and/or non-key) membership?

Status check of the laser cutter? Is it available for public use? Any progress on training/certification for it (and the shop-bot)?

Thanks!

The laser works, but we've hit a snag implementing the RFID board. Daniel is supposed to set a few training dates for the ShopBot.
