I'm going nuts trying to find a not permanent glue to hold down a waterproof LED strip. I tried hot glue and it comes right off, even tried Elmer's Glue with no luck. I don't want them to be permanently glued down so if they stop working in time. I just am looking for a good strong temporary over time hold.

What are you trying to glue it to?

Wood, it's the silicone covered waterproof LEDs

Barge cement would probably be the best, but it would be a more permanent bond. VHB tape would work for sure, but it's pricy. Others to try include E6000, Silicone caulk, and polyurethane caulk.

I use flat thumb tacks on any wood that's thick enough.

If thumbtacks aren't an option I take some stiff wire (single strand from solid core ethernet cable) and loosely wrap it around the LED strip a few times everywhere I want to glue then use a generous amount of hot glue.  That combo has held the lights under my kitchen cabinets for years now.

From Adafruit. The link is below

  • Very few glues will adhere to the weatherproof silicone sleeve. Using zip ties for a “mechanical” bond is usually faster and easier. The only reliable glues we’ve found are Permatex 66B Clear RTV Silicone (not all silicone glues will work!) and Loctite Plastics Bonding System, a 2-part cyanoacrylate glue. Customers have reported excellent results with Permatex Ultra Grey Silicone Gasket Maker as well.
  • However, do not use Permatex 66B silicone to seal the open end of a cut strip! Like many RTV silicones, 66B releases acetic acid when curing, which can destroy electronics. It’s fine on the outside of the strip, but not the inside. Use GE Silicone II for sealing strip ends, or good ol’ hot melt glue.
  • 2-sided carpet tape provides a light grip on the silicone sleeve; something like a Post-It Note. Or you can try clear duct tape over the top.

If you're looking for an alternative to the silicone-covered strips, for the running boards on my art car I got some cheap shelving rails from Home Depot, flipped them upside down, laid the LED strip in the rail, and taped over it with packing tape.  It got kicked about a hundred times over the week and the thin packing tape got a little torn up and had to be replaced, but it survived.

Scott,

Ranger Kentucky here! We briefly chatted on playa about your art car, since it was clear it wasn’t a re-topped golf cart, but I had no idea there was any overlap with LVL1 :)

I’m on playa every year with the MacGyvers’ Union, where you can harass me by asking for Tinker if you’re ever in the 7:30 sector. My ham call is W9MCP, in case you hear me on the Gerlach repeater or see my own APRS tracking activity out there.
