open source/social networking apps

Hey,

Has anyone worked on any open source/social netowkring/membership
kinds of apps? (web/mobile)

I'm looking at humhub/elgg and a few others. I'm looking for an app
that I can modify, but I'd rather not spend a bunch of time going down
the "wrong" path.

Also anyone have eperience with mailchimp or one of the MTA services
to be able to send 100s/1000s of emails/mth.
