OT: Getting Higher Resolution from interface

This isn't exactly on topic since I don't think it's a Linux issue as much as a hardware issue.

I have a Dell m3800 which had a HDMI port and a thunderbolt connection that allows me to connect an external device.

The HDMI port as far as I can tell is limited to:  1920x1080 (or at least Ubuntu limits it to that ).

The thunderbolt to DVI adapter also limits my external monitor to the same resolution even though it supports 2560x1440.  


that supposedly gets me a higher resolution by taking up the thunderbolt + USB port to get the higher throughput.  Has anyone tried using this on a PC based 
laptop?  They claim it was designed for a macbook pro, though I'm assuming that's mostly because thunderbolt aren't that common on the PC landscape? (Or at least as common as they are on apple).

Any thoughts?
