Not expert but it's something we've been exploring.

The video at the end of this post gives an introduction. It's real value is in creating circles of trust (money is only one application), records, registers, transactions - the blockchain and mutual distributed ledgers could be the way to decentralise power.

I'm sure some do.

Salient for me is the tension between institutions controlling access to blockchain info & its wider freer control by users generally. To me it is just an unerasable white/black-board, hence validating transactions/obligations, and money with its social legal paraphinalia is largely a way of strengthening & collectivising transactions, agreements, trade. So the validation process which you can get people to swallow is of the essence of creating money. If institutions own it they will milk it. So it should be collective or (could this be an 'and'?) (inter)nationalised.

There is also the little issue of how bit-coin type mining could be undermined by quantum computing. ok there are also related cans of worms in the mining process currently afaics..
