How to adjust space against incoming receipts based on planning?



Say you have 1000 sq. ft. area.Give 20% for internal
movements.Consider remaining 80% as space with you. Take approximate
length,breadth and height of each items. Accurately is not possible
but approximately is possible in terms of feet for warehouse
operators.



Next step - Take length & breadth of warehouse but take height only as
10 ft. bcos stacking for all items upto 20 or 40 ft. is not possible
so take 10 ft. standard height.



Result - You will get warehouse volume. Subtract 20% volume for
material transition.



Take relation volume is equivalent to area i.e. volume = area.



Percentagewise or by cross multiplication use formula

"Warehouse volume = 1000sq.ft - 20% transition space=800 sq. ft.

Then take all items approximate dimension. Put against each items in
excel stock sheet. Get all material volume but care should be taken
that height for finding material volume should not exceed 10 inspite
practical heapings/stackings are upto 40 fts. Then compare

Warehouse volume=800 sq. ft. area

Material volume = say if 700 sq. ft. area then warehouse does not need
space but if material volume = 900 sq. ft. that means warehouse
stackings is above standard norms



It takes 1 or 2 days to note all approximate dimensions of material
and when inputted against each items of stock statement the material
volume is available and thereby approximate space demand can also be
calculated. In this way based on future lots to come in warehouse we
can plan accordingly for space availability.



Those who know the thesis of percentage and cross multiplication can
easily reach to solution of space availability based on this idea.

Ravi,
Thanks for your post. I just had a quick scan through it and it looks
to be quite useful.
What do our other members think of this formula?
