Some of you will remember how about 8 months ago I had a daft idea to make some open source hardware - that would be cool for hackspaces to hack.

Well, yesterday I found out that Nanode has been nominated an award for the Best Internet of Things Open Source Project 2011.

From it's humble beginnings at London Hackspace, Nanode has come a long way - with over 1600 of the original units sold and branching out into two new complimentary new boards with low power wireless fitted. First we have Nanode RF  with realtime clock and a micro SD card holder for datalogging. Secondly is our Standalone Node - WiNode, also with a RTC and a high power H bridge IC for driving 2 dc motors or relays.

Both come in kit form - but we also have some pre-assembled Nanode RF units for those who would prefer not to solder.

Here's an opprotunity for London Hackspace to support their home-grown product - and help vote for it in this weeks Award

http://postscapes.com/best-iot-open-source-project-2011

As usual,  Hackspace members get a 10% discount of all Nanode products they buy - and if you pick up in person yourself from LHS  we won't charge the postage.   You could have a shiny new, blue Nanode RF in time for Christmas for just £20, plus a matching WiNode for £15.

With an outside range of 250m  a pair of WiNodes could make the basis of an effective 2 way communicator for private messaging  - handy for that protest march you are going to be on in 2012.

More details here of the products.

Voted Ken, well done. Saw that Open Energy Monitor was nominated to,
that's a good thing.

Well done. Voted for you.

Now all I need to do is to get round to building that nanode kit which
is still sitting in its bag making me feel guilty.

I want to make an Arduino that can control four stepper motors (11
digital pins), can provide two 12 volt connectors and has two digital
inputs. Has the nanode got the pins to do this?

well done Ken, voted for you...
I'd like to order 2 of the WiNode's which I am sorely tempted to rename
Wino's

Tim

Thanks for your support - but we are just about on the point of being totally outgunned on votes by the mighty Arduino. (their 500k sales against our 1600)

Massimo Banzi (founder of Arduino) tweeted to his 3688 followers to vote for his product - so that's us just about out of ammo.

A good time to have a word with my mate Buzz - about what it's like being 2nd.

see our page at nanode.eu/buy for details of how to order your couple of winos  :)

Hopefully I will be along to the space on Tuesday as I am keen to hear from Dr Sue Black about the goto foundation

I just clicked 3 times and managed to cast 3 votes!

Thanks

Much appreciated.  :)

Whilst we may only come 2nd in this race - it has alerted the voters to the fact that there are other products out there than the ever-dominant Arduino - and some of those products might actually be a better starting point for Internet of Things.

No publicity is bad publicity

Seems a bit unfair. Yes, the Arduino is deservedly the great IOT
creation of the decade. Full respect.

But surely 2011 should acknowledge an actual 2011 innovation.

You are still in the fight right now, just 115 votes, or 39 voters
behind.

Phil,

Arduino is arguably the greatest Open Source Hardware creation of the last decade.

However, unexpanded, in it's standard form, it has very little to do with the Internet of Things - the clue is in the word Internet.  The standard Uno has no integral ethernet connectivity.

Had the Arduino Ethernet been nominated - yes - a different matter. But as the picture shows the standard Uno - its association with IoT and the nomination is questionable.

Sorry to be pedantic, but in computer science - it helps to be precise.

Two days to go, still in the lead.

Nanode: 1,041 votes.
Arduino: 941 votes.
Everything else: < 400 votes.

I reckon Arduino can easily make another big push with a tweet or two so I'd be cautious of premature excitement :D

Hear hear!
I think Arduino should lose 1000 points for releasing a new ide with
libraries that break everything.......
