Has anyone successfully replaced blow capacitors on a PC motherboard?

I have a non-working motherboard with a few blown caps. It doesn't get as far as post. The blown caps are fairly obvious, but I don't want to waste effort in replacing them if their blowing has caused other, irreparable damage.
Has anybody done this successfully?
I'll bring the mobo into the space later this evening, if anyone wants to look at it.

have they blown their tops and leaked out their bottoms (is there a nicer
way to say that? ;) ...bottom leakage (...) might have damaged the mobo...

For LCD TV's and food mixers, not mobo's (yet, I have one out of a bin that
worked fine for a year, but now fails to power up, I suspect the *majorly*
bulging capacitors are at fault...iif you haven't done it by February give
me shout...)

even at Maplin prices the total cost is likely to be well under a fiver,
and if we have them (beware the rescued capacitors, no idea of their
condition) it'll be even better value. Depending on the motherboard you could
not snip the legs till after the first test and reclaim the caps ;) well
worth the de/soldering practice...

put a 'scope on the supply rails, if it is lumpy, well worth
spending a bit of time & money, imho.

take the caps out and give it a good clean just in case any
electrolyte has spilt on the board, old toothbrush and isopropyl
alcohol is good.

Cheers

I've replaced them before, but some time ago. It usually fixed them, but
can't say with regard to modern motherboards which may be more easily
damaged by caps going out of spec.

Thanks all. I've 3 obviously bulging caps and another 6 that look dodgy. They're all 1800uF 6.3v from the same manufacturer, so it looks like I'll have to replace all 9 of them. Fortunately, none have started leaking. I've had a quick look on Maplin's website, but they don't seem to do that value/voltage combination. Farnell want to charge nearly £4 P&P for a £4.80 order. Is anyone putting an order in with Farnell in the near future that they can be added to? I'll pay my share of any P&P.

The mobo is fairly modern with an AMD dual core processor and DDR2 memory.
I thought capacitor manufacturers had solved the problem of the electrolyte causing faulty caps!

Hi Henry,

CPC do free delivery on any order greater than £5 ex VAT. They're essentially the same company as Farnell anyway - cpc.farnell.com

Hope this helps.

Stephen.

Another choice is RS: free delivery on all orders, but not surprisingly are often a bit more expensive. They have a worse range of semiconductors, but often a better range of passives. And ever since they stopped grouping all the capacitors with the same leading digit together (they now sort by value!) the website is merely clunky rather than like pulling teeth.

They also have a shop that is a few minutes from Hackney Wick Overground station.

You can have orders sent there, which avoids the delivery charge.

But beware!!! When they say things are "in store for immediate collection" it only means that theoretically. Not that the depot actually has them. Which is kind of annoying.

RS caps are cheaper than Farnell and their Bow depot is easy for me to get to. Unfortunately, they only sell 10mm dia caps in that value. Those won't fit in some of the spaces of 8mm dia caps where they are close together.

These will probably do the job:
http://cpc.farnell.com/panasonic-electronic-components/eeufk0j152l/capacitor-electrolytic-6-3v-1500uf/dp/CA07326

Not 1800uF, but I'd say it's worth a try, if you can't get 1800uF easily/cheaply. The tolerance on electrolytics is such that 1500uF is likely close enough.

Hope this helps.

Stephen.

Ebay's probably your best bet. This seller has multiple brands of 8mm caps:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-Panasonic-JAPAN-FL-1800uF-6-3v-105C-ref-301-/282322986647?hash=item41bbc2e697:g:wVYAAOSwSzdXCn8g

Two lots of five, including post, comes to £3.53

Jon,

Thanks for the offer, but the only 8mm, 1800uF, 6.3V caps that DigiKey sell are out of stock. Grrrr!

Thanks Sci,
I've just ordered them.
BTW, are you related to Danny Turpin, who I used to work with in Arcola Street, Stoke Newington?

Yes, on an old ASUS A7N8X, It's one of the first things i did at the HS:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/london-hack-space/tSiTTTBJMOM

The main issue is getting the ground plane hot enough - it acts as a
heatsink, you may need to get someone to hold a 2nd soldering iron on the
joints you want to remove to get them hot enough.

Thanks, Jasper.

Yours was a different board, but you've increased my confidence that it can be done.
I don't seem to have a large ground plane to contend with, but I do have two irons, just it case.

And I don't think I have any relatives called Danny. At least none in my
immediate family tree.

Thanks. It was just a wild guess, as I thought your surname was not a common one and Stoke Newington is nearby.

Henry.
