That's it. We're not messing around anymore, we're buying a bigger
dictionary. - Tibor Fischer, The Thought Gang.

We currently have the lathe, storage shelves and an unassigned area
that gets very messy with dumped stuff at one end, and the rest of the
tools, the laser cutter, and workbenches at the other.
This sites dust and swarf-making stuff at both ends, and encourages
poor storage in the middle, while the laser cutter is in one of the
areas worst for wood dust.
What if we had the laser cutter where the lathe is, moved all the
metalworking machinery into one dirty area, and arranged the open
working area with the tables to discourage the dumping of piles of kit
?

The problem with this is that we'd have to vent the laser fumes onto
the walkway, which wouldn't be very pleasant. I think the laser cutter
has to remain approximately where it is so it can vent out the back
wall.

Well, I'm not disagreeing with you - I'm sure it'll fit, but it's
still going to be cozy which will make maintenance difficult.
Bear in mind that we sometimes do laser cutter inductions with 10 or
more people; it's a popular machine. Ten people will not fit in that
room, which means we'll have to do it in smaller groups which will
annoy the lovely people who give up their time to do the inductions.
I'm also very conscious at the inertia we're building up by modifying
things which we'll have to put back when we move out. If we remove the
waste pipe from that room it may well be be difficult to replace
without knocking more walls down.
We're starting to feel that the current space is becoming a bit small
already. If we keep growing at the current rate we'll definitely want
to be moving within a year.

Sorry for OT, but the email below makes me unutterably happy.

Come on Phish... Thats not in the spirit of the Hackspace
Surely theres a way we can attempt the same thing with a series of kinnects, arduionos and a clustered java platform?
Oh, and we can open source it too!
